Never a Dull Moment: Weekend Preview 1/25-26

Friday

Trinity (13-5, 2-2) @ #8 Williams (15-2, 4-1)

Williams had gone completely undefeated until last weekend when they lost their first two games in a row to Amherst and Middlebury. Before this it seemed pretty clear that Williams was the favorite in the CAC and one of the favorite seeds nationally, but at this point we may need to reevaluate. In their game against Midd the Ephs shot a measly 10% from 3-point range. Could this possibly explain what seems to be an out of place loss? Maybe, maybe not, though. The Amherst loss was probably an even bigger blow to Williams, they were leading at half and had all the opportunity in the world to take that game but they couldn’t pull it out. This next game needs to be a turning point for Williams if they still wish to fulfill their lofty goal of a national championship. Trinity, on the other hand, are feeling good right now. They went up to snowy Maine and took both games from Colby and Bowdoin, much improving their NESCAC record. They also were able to sweep their latest 2 mid-week games, putting them up to a 4 game win streak. This would be a huge opportunity for the Bantams to shake up the conference. The only question is whether or not the Bantams have the grit to hold of big bad Williams.

Score Prediction: Williams 81 – Trinity 72

#25 Wesleyan (14-4, 4-1) @ Bates (5-12, 2-3)

The Cardinals are on a roll at the moment as they have won their last 6 games. To make that even more impressive, within those 6 wins they faced 4 NESCAC teams and 3 nationally ranked teams. All of these feats have pushed them into a national ranking of their own. Jordan Bonner and Austin Hutcherson continue to thrive as the core of the Wesleyan team with terrific support from Antone Walker and others. As of now I would consider Wesleyan a member of the top 4 elite in the NESCAC along with Williams, Hamilton and Amherst. The fact that they have taken down two of those three already shows their talent. Bates has been a surprise team as of late. Looking at their preseason record I was not expecting much from the Bobcats but they have held their own in conference thus far. Big wins over Tufts and Colby have lifted them every so slightly out of the cellar of the NESCAC. Despite their success against these low to mid tier teams, I just don’t think they have what it takes to take down a team like Wesleyan, especially not right now.

Score Prediction: Wesleyan 82 – Bates 69

Connecticut College (6-11, 0-5) @ Tufts (8-10, 2-3)

Justin Kouyoumdjian will have to bring his A-game for the Jumbos to make a turn around this weekend

Tufts is a confusing team, to say the least. One game they will take down a Middlebury squad who have received national votes and then the next game they will lose to a bottom-tier team like Bates. It’s fairly evident that consistency is an issue for this squad, but at the same time they are talented enough to hang with most teams. Luke Rogers has been a solid big man for the Jumbos, nearly putting up a double-double a game. Beyond him no names and numbers really stand out on the stat sheet and that is their issue. Tufts has a lot of solid role players but not enough star players. If everyone happens to get hot then they are extremely dangerous but on your average game they are not anything to write home about. If anyone was going to hand Conn their first win of the year, it could be this Tufts team. While Tuft’s biggest issue is inconsistency, Conn’s biggest issue is their consistency: they are constantly losing. David Labossiere and Dan Draffan have been holding down the for for the Camels but there is only so much these guys can do. It’s clear that these guys are good NESCAC basketball players, they just need more of those to support them. I’m going to take a risk here though and say that Conn is going to roll into Medford and pick up their first conference win. I mean you can’t lose every game, right?

Score Prediction: Conn 81 – Tufts 80

Colby (12-5, 1-3) @ #19 Amherst (13-2, 2-1)

The Mammoths find themselves back in the national rankings this week after taking down formerly undefeated Williams in a non-conference matchup. After the last 2 intense matchups that Amherst has had, there will probably be a sense of relief for them being able to stay home and face a slightly less dangerous squad. Amherst has only lost 1 home game this season and it was against a very good Babson team. The thing I like most about this Amherst team is that they receive contributions from everyone on the roster. They have 8 guys that have clocked in for every game and nobody has played less than 7 games this year. When everyone gets a chance to be involved, it is much harder for the defense to develop a game plan and that has showed in Amherst’s success. Colby has been fairly frustrating to watch as a team this year. The big win over Tufts to start the season was extremely uplifting and gave that team a lot of hope but since then it seems as if everything has gone wrong. Losing tight games to Trinity and Bowdoin as well as a loss to Bates really hurts the Mules’ slim chances of making playoffs. With a very talented lineup that includes Sam Jefferson, Matt Hanna, Wallace Tucker and Noah Tyson one would expect that the Mules can compete game in and game out. While they have been competing they just haven’t been finishing. Maybe this weekend can change that, but I doubt it.

Score Prediction: Amherst 92 – Colby 81

Saturday

Bowdoin (11-5, 2-2) @ #19 Amherst (13-2, 2-1)

After facing Colby on Friday the Mammoths with play host to another Maine team in Bowdoin. So far this year it seems as if Bowdoin has taken the “gimme” wins in the NESCAC of Bates and Colby, although they were barely able to hang onto their win against the Mules. I actually think that Bowdoin has a really strong starting 5, or at least core 3, and am surprised that they weren’t able to find success against teams like Tufts and Trinity. Those wins could have been huge for the Polar Bears but they couldn’t pull them out and now they need to look in harder places to find wins, harder places like Amherst, Mass. As I just talked about Amherst in the last paragraph you know how I feel about their team. They are solid and well balanced and can compete with anyone in the NESCAC. I don’t see them losing this game either but I think Bowdoin might give them a little scare that they weren’t expecting.

Score Prediction: Amherst 88 – Bowdoin 83

#25 Wesleyan (14-4, 4-1) @ Tufts (8-10, 2-3)

It’ll be a big weekend for Antone Walker and the Cardinals who are riding a 6-game win streak

Wesleyan drew the short straw this week, having to trek all the way up to Maine on Friday and then all the way to Massachusetts on Saturday. I hope that bus is comfy because those boys will be spending around 8 hours on it over a short 2 day period. Although the travel may pose some problems for the Cardinals, their opponents are less of a problem. Tufts’ loss to Bates put their abilities more into perspective. They are not the team they once were and are now struggling to maintain a middle-of-the-pack status in the conference. While Tufts has been falling behind Wesleyan has been catching up to the top of the conference at a rapid rate. Purely based on momentum this should be Wesleyan’s game.

Score Prediction: Wesleyan 86 – Tufts 71

Connecticut College (6-11, 0-5) @ Bates (5-12, 2-3)

Despite their decent NESCAC record, I don’t remember the last time that Bates was favored in a conference matchup. For Bobcat fans, today is your lucky day. Bates has proved that they are a gritty team who can play up to the level of their opponents, even against much stronger opponents. Conn has had many opportunities to surprise us and pull off an upset but they have never seized it and there’s just not too much to say about them. Bates, on the other hand, has the opportunity to sneak up the conference standing by taking a fairly easy game from one of the only teams that they may have an edge on. I wouldn’t expect this to be a quality basketball game as far as NESCAC basketball goes, but a win will be huge for either team that walks away victorious.

Score Prediction: Bates 74 – Conn 68

Colby (12-5, 1-3) @ #6 Hamilton (15-1, 2-1)

Michael Grassey will have to help lead the way for the Continentals

Hamilton has a pretty simple weekend ahead of them, two home games against two Maine teams that, on paper, they are far superior than. The Continentals have the most consistent starting 5 of anyone in the conference. All 5 of their starters have started every single game that they’ve had this season. That makes it clear that Hamilton has a strong gameplan that they are confident in and clearly they have been executing it well. Colby, much like Wesleyan, have a tough travel schedule this weekend as well as a tough schedule of opponents. When looking at all outside conditions it looks like Hamilton has a huge advantage well before the jump. When looking at all on-court factors, Hamilton wins big again. If Colby wins this game it will be through pure grit and lights out 3-point shooting. If Hamilton wins, it will be because they should.

Score Prediction: Hamilton 91 – Colby 80

Trinity (13-5, 2-2) @ Middlebury (14-5, 3-2)

Our final game of the weekend comes from Middlebury and Trinity. Midd id coming off of a lot of rest time for this game and they also have home court advantage. Trinity will have faced an elite Williams team in Massachusetts and then have to go to Vermont and have to face a ready-to-go Panthers squad. Midd should go into this game with heaps of confidence as the last time that they played a game was taking down formerly undefeated Williams last weekend. Although Trinity has a 4-game win streak heading into the weekend, it is more likely than not that that streak will be broken before they even reach Vermont.

Score Prediction: Midd 82 – Trinity 75

Basketball Friday Preview: Give me an upset please

Friday Night Preview – NESCAC Men’s Basketball

#24 Amherst (11-1, 1-0) @ Connecticut College (5-8, 0-2)

Amherst rolls into this game with a shiny new top-25 ranking next to their name. Conn on the other hand, has been struggling as of late. This game seems as if it should be fairly predictable, with not much of a chance for success for Conn. While the Mammoths have no trouble scoring, averaging just over 86 PPG, it is really their defense that sets them apart. They have not allowed an opponent to score more than 71 points against them in any one game. For Amherst defense really has been their best offense. Conn enters this weekend having lost 3 of their last 4 games. In their defense, they were up against #3 Williams and formerly ranked Midd, making it a tough overall weekend for the Camels. This weekend may look to be one in the same as they are faced with yet another top 25 opponent. If there’s one thing that Conn has going for them right now, it is strength of schedule.

For the Camels to have a shot, David Labossiere will need to take this game over.

Score Prediction: #24 Amherst 88 – Conn 67

#3 Williams (13-0, 2-0) @ Tufts (7-8, 1-1)

The Ephs have continued to absolutely steamroll everyone that stands between them and perfection. They easily took down Conn and Wesleyan last weekend and I doubt a trip to Medford brings any anxiety to these guys. 4 out of their 5 starters are averaging over 10 PPG and they are holding their opponents to less than 60 PPG. There has been no evidence to convince me that any NESCAC team can take down Williams let alone Tufts. Last weekend the Jumbos went up to Maine and split games against Colby and Bowdoin. While the Jumbos feature 5 players on their roster who are averaging double digits every game, it seems to be their defense that consistently is inconsistent. Tufts can try their hardest to defend home court but in all reality they have next to no chance of taking down Williams.

Score Prediction: #3 Williams 92 – Tufts 78

Middlebury (11-4, 1-1) @ Bates (4-10, 1-1)

While this contest features two teams that are .500 in-conference, not all .500 teams are created equal. Middlebury’s recent loss to Wesleyan was just enough to kick them out of the top 25 while Bates stole a league game from a Colby team that is nothing if not inconsistent. Middlebury has a strong core of starters and their record does not do their talent a justice. They are clearly a high level team in this conference along with the likes of Hamilton and Amherst. This weekend will be an opportunity for the Panthers to right the ship and get themselves back on course to compete for a NESCAC title or a NCAA bid. Bates on the other hand might want to keep celebrating that rivalry win last week for as long as they can. The Bobcats simply are not as talented as the rest of the NESCAC and their win over Colby was an absolute prayer. Before that game the Bobcats were on a 8 game losing streak and this game against Midd might just be a catalyst to start another one.

Spellman and the Bobcats will try to defend their home court tonight, coming off last weekend’s big NESCAC win against Colby.

Score Prediction: Midd 86 – Bates 69

Bowdoin (8-4, 1-1) @ Trinity (9-5, 0-2)

While Bowdoin’s record looks decent, their strength of schedule is not. They have had a fairly soft schedule to start the season and it showed in their game against Tufts where they just weren’t able to keep up. The trio of Hugh O’Neil ‘19, David Reynolds ‘20 and Jack Simonds ‘19 have been holding down the fort for the Polar Bears but they just can’t seem to figure out which other two players complement these guys best and that is where their struggles have come. The Bantams were thrown into the fire last weekend having to face two talented teams in #6 Hamilton and #24 Amherst. Up until these two games the Bantams looked like a quality team, having won 6 of their last 7. Trinity is a highly defensive team who can win a ball game while still scoring less than 70 points. I expect Trinity to turn it around on their home turf this weekend and hold back the Polar Bears in what is sure to be a defensive battle.

Score Prediction: Trinity 68 – Bowdoin 59

Destiny Awaits: Week 9 Weekend Preview

Well, NESCAC fans, it’s been a fun season with a surprising amount of upsets, full of talented new faces and the continued dominance of veterans. We have one last ride together this season, and this preview should help cap it off. We still have some championship implications alive here as Trinity needs to beat Wesleyan on the road to secure their third straight NESCAC championship, and I’m sure that Mark Piccirillo won’t want to head off into the sunset of his football career on a low note. Expect some fireworks there. If Trinity loses and Amherst wins, then the Mammoths will retake the NESCAC crown, although they have no cake walk either with a game against a volatile Williams squad. I’m excited thinking about it and you should be too. Cold weather football is the best and it’s finally here.
Hamilton @ Bates 12:00
I can’t really imagine how deflating that loss to Bowdoin must’ve felt for Bates last week, but I would imagine it hurt. Bates officially lost its chances to retain part of the CBB for the first time in 5 years and were on the receiving end of Bowdoin’s first win in 24 tries. All they have left now is playing to avoid a winless season, but it doesn’t look like they have a quarterback to do it, losing their first two stringers and leaving WR/DB Kevin Claflin ‘19 to take snaps under center. Plus, it feels like the type of day where the good Kenny Gray ‘20 shows up for Hamilton. Look for the Continentals to end the season on a high, and the Bobcats on the lowest of lows.
Final Score: Hamilton 34, Bates 6
Trinity @ Wesleyan 12:00
The Bantams take their shot at a three-peat in Middletown on Saturday while the Cardinals look to play spoiler and pull off what feels like an improbable 6-3 season, coming off their big win over Williams. The Cardinals defense can play with anyone, but they’re going to get their money’s worth against this Trinity offense. The other problem too is that Wesleyan simply can’t hang in a shootout with Trin. QB Mark Piccirillo ‘19 was 9-17 for 151 yds and 1 TD against Williams and 75 of those yards came on one pass. Those numbers don’t equate to much success against this Trinity D. A dynasty will he cemented on Saturday.

Rivalry weekend in CT, so get ready.

Final Score: Trinity 38, Wesleyan 14

Williams @ Amherst
On paper this game seems like a forgone conclusion with Williams QB Bobby Maimaron ‘21 missing the Biggest Little Game in America with a knee injury. They haven’t had the offensive success they thought they’d have this year with Maimaron under center so why would QB Jackson Bischoping ‘22 have any luck against this fearsome Amherst defense? Well Bischoping in his brief time as Eph understudy has shown an uncanny ability to find WR Frank Stola ‘21, and this Williams defense is humming along lately as well as they have since they were fully healthy. Upset on the cards? Not quite, this Amherst team will just be better on Saturday, but this game has always been close lately and this one will be no different.

John Callahan is an under appreciated stud for the Amherst defense.

Final Score Amherst 24 Williams 20

Tufts @ Middlebury 12:30
Two teams without much to play for except bragging rights and being able to go out with a W. At this point we have no idea what Middlebury team is going to show up, and this Tufts team has done nothing but come to play every weekend, only dropping two respectable contests to the two best teams in the league, Amherst and Trinity (both away). QB Ryan McDonald ‘19 has been spectacular all year (as some of us said he would be) and still has an outside shot at winning Player of the Year, especially if they finish 7-2. Middlebury’s offense has never been able to replicate the rhythm they found in Williamstown, and Will Jernigan ‘21 has been the most inconsistent quarterback in the league not named Kenny Gray. Theoretically this could be a great game but in actuality Tufts has been better on both sides of the ball all season and it isn’t going to change Saturday.
Final Score Tufts 27, Middlebury 10

Trap City: Week 8 Weekend Preview

Week 8 Preview:

Middlebury (4-3) @ Hamilton (2-5)

Midd wasn’t expected to roll into Hartford and beat Trinity, but losing 48-0 was not a good showing for the program. Only 73 yards of offense? How does that even happen? I know Trinity is a really good team but an over .500 team like MIddlebury should have at least put up some sort of fight. Along with their non-existent offense the Panthers also surrendered over 500 yards of offense to Trinity, showing that they didn’t have it together on either front. Midd needs to be careful this weekend against a Hamilton team that has shown that they can steal a win against a better opponent. A 5-3 record looks much better than 4-4 heading into the final week of the season so Midd will need to have a short memory and bring their A game, or even their B game honestly, in order to take down this Continental squad.

The Panthers need their offensive weapons to put up some numbers this weekend.

Hamilton had a pretty decent showing against a very good Williams team last weekend in their 27-17 loss. QB Kenny Gray continued to be a consistent piece for the Continentals, racking up 2 TDs and 256 yards of total offense. What I forgot to mention about Gray though is that he got picked off 4 times. When you give the ball away as freely as he did last weekend, it’s essentially an automatic loss. It is more than obvious at this point in the season that Hamilton relies heavily, and perhaps too heavily, on Gray’s arm for their offense. Their running game is lackluster and it more often than not is Gray leading the team in rushes with less than 50 yards. This one dimensional offense can cause problems for Hamilton as other teams are well aware that their is not much of a threat on the ground and can therefore focus on pass defense. The defense has a solid game, picking off QB Bobby Mamarion once and recovering a fumble, but it wasn’t quite enough to keep their offence in the game. One thing that the Continentals should keep in mind is after being thrashed last weekend Midd’s spirits may be low and Hamilton could try and take advantage of this out of the gate and come guns blazing at them. This is a winnable game for Hamilton but certainly not guaranteed.

Score Prediction: Midd 27 Hamilton 21

Colby (2-5) @ Tufts (5-2)

The Colby Mules have won two games in a row since who knows when. Coach Cosgrove really seems to be doing the best with what was given to him in his first year in charge and is oh so close to capturing the CBB title that hasn’t been in Waterville for quite a few years. The Mules were able to beat Bates last weekend with ease, jumping out to a 21-6 halftime lead and maintaining that score until the end of the 4th quarter. Against Bates they didn’t have an offense, they had Jake Schwern. Schwern ran for 226 yards and all 3 of Colby’s TDs, earning his NESCAC Offensive Player of the Week honors. On a cold, slippery, snowy day it was tough for freshman QB Matt Hersch to get anything going in the air so they elected to force feed Schwern the ball and it payed off. Defensively they clearly overmatched Bates, one Brendan Costa TD run being their only blemish. While they were easily able to the down the Bobcats, the Jumbos are a completely different ballgame. Schwern has proved much less effective against better NESCAC teams so I would be surprised to see him get anywhere near his numbers last weekend. The best chance the Mules have is to hope for nicer weather and hope that QB Matt Hersch can solidify his name in Rookie of the Year talks by orchestrating the upset of the season.

Tufts had their chance last weekend to remain in title contention in their game against Amherst but nearly missed out in their 19-13 loss. Amherst seemed to be a step ahead all game, just has they’ve been a step ahead of the league this entire season. QB Ryan McDonald’s 2 interceptions played a crucial part in how the Jumbos were quite able to keep up with Amherst. When you’re playing an undefeated team with unmatched confidence, giving away the ball will kill you. Tufts relied heavily on McDonald but he was only able to throw for 137 yards on 34 attempts. It was going to be a tough matchup for the Jumbos no matter what, nobody has dethroned Amherst yet and Tufts just didn’t have what it takes to effectively break down Amherst’s defense. Defensively Tufts fared pretty well, allowing Amherst less than 300 yards of total offense. It’s a harsh reality for Jumbo fans but Amherst was simply a better team than Tufts and deserved to take home the win last weekend. What matters now is going forwards and trying to become the best of the rest. After playing the Mammoths last weekend Colby will be a welcomed foe in Medford. This should be a fairly easy win for the Jumbos barring some serious mental errors and lack of concentration.

Score Prediction: Tufts 30 Colby 13

Wesleyan (4-3) @ Williams (5-2)

Wesleyan didn’t even break a sweat last weekend, taking down the still winless Bowdoin 24-0. It should’ve been an easy victory for the Cardinals and it was. QB Mark Piccirillo threw for 2 of Wesleyan’s TDs while RB Glen Smith has a day of it, going for over 100 yards and snagging a TD of his own. This game was another example of one opponent out classing the other out of the gate. It seemed as if Bowdoin never had a shot a winning from the kickoff. The Cardinal defense held the Polar Bears to exactly 100 yards of total offense, making getting into Wesleyan territory an accomplishment. Although Wesleyan was able to take care of Bowdoin with ease, Williams will almost certainly be a much more interesting contest. Wesleyan has a chance to surpass Williams in the standing this weekend if they play their cards (pun intended) right.

Time for Piccirillo to show us what he’s made of.

Williams took the long trek to Clinton last weekend and came back home with a dub. QB Bobby Mamarion had a solid overall game, tossing 2 much needed TDs for the Mammoths. RB Cartel Begel piled on with over 100 yards and a TD of his own to put an exclamation point on the game. This was a game that Williams should have, could have and did win. Their defense managed to pick off Hamilton QB Kenny Gray not once, not twice, not three times but four times! Luke Apuzzi was able to snag 2 of those interceptions which swung the momentum very favorable for the Ephs. K Andrew Schreibs was knocking down his extra point attempts as well as his 2 field goals with ease, which actually managed to make a solid difference in the contest. It was a huge team effort overall by the Ephs and the will need that again this weekend as the face a potentially underrated Wesleyan team.

Score Prediction: Williams 24 Wesleyan 21

Bates (0-7) @ Bowdoin (0-7)

The Bobcats may have been hyped for their snowy home game (https://twitter.com/Bates_Football/status/1056228141037948928) but they are yet to find the win column.

It’s CBB time once again. You have to love the CBB, it’s the only contest where you can lose almost 80% of your games and still have the chance to take home a trophy. That is what the Bobcats will do this weekend as they head into Brunswick to face Bowdoin. The biggest story of the game last weekend for Bates was the exit of their QB, Alex Costa, due to injury. Costa has been the biggest piece, arguably the only piece, of offense that Bates has had this season. With Costa I would say that Bates should have no business losing to Bowdoin but now it is anyone’s ballgame. QB Jack Bryant took over for Costa after he left but was a non-factor as both teams were just running the ball up the gut the entire game. If the weather favors a little better this weekend and the passing game comes more into play, Bryant will need to show that he is an equally effective distributor to Costa and keep Bate’s CBB hopes alive for another week.

Bowdoin’s season had been bad. Their offense and defense both rank last in many major categories and they have not showed signs of improvement throughout the year. Golden arm QB Austin McCrum has done essentially nothing since joining the Polar Bears and had another lackluster game last weekend, racking up only 80 yards and a pick. That being said, this is Bowdoin’s opportunity to right the ship. A win against Bates will be all the momentum they need to carry into the next weekend against Colby to potentially steal a CBB ‘ship out of absolutely nowhere. Now do I think that they can actually do this or is this just a description of die hard Polar Bear fans’ dreams, you tell me. It all starts and could potentially end this weekend for the Polar Bears so why not throw it all out on the line and try some new things. I’m not, and never will be, a football coach but I can tell you that business as usual has not and will not work for Bowdoin.

Score Prediction: Bates 17 Bowdoin 6

Big Spreads and Small Hopes; Week 6 Weekend Preview

Well folks we are just over halfway through the season and are getting a pretty clear idea of how the conference is going to shake out. Teams have separated into three tiers and it is pretty easy to see where each team lies. The top four teams all have at least four wins, Amherst leading the way with five. Secondly, there are the 3 mid-tier teams, all hovering right around the .500 mark. Finally, we have the three winless teams, all of whom happen to reside in the same state. These three tiers make predictions much easier, almost always if a higher-tier team is playing a lower one, they will win by a significant margin. That being said, it is football and there are some unexpected upsets every now and then. Let’s hope for more unexpected results as we roll into the final half of the season.

Hamilton (2-3) @ Colby (0-5)

Hamilton found themselves on the right side of a blowout for the first time in a long time. The Continentals dropped 62 points on Bowdoin, the second highest total in their 128 years of football.  QB Kenny Gray was absolutely incredible. He completed 74% of his passes, totalling 293 yards and 4 touchdowns in their air. Additionally, he contributed 8 rushes for 87 yards. David Kagan and Mitch Bierman added a touch down each while Joe Park added 2 of his own. Will Budington was Gray’s main endzone target, hauling in three touchdowns on the day. It was clear that Bowdoin had no answer for the Hamilton offense and Hamilton took advantage of that. Bowdoin tried to stay in the game initially, only trailing by 11 at halftime. After a few second half adjustments Hamilton was able to shut down the Polar Bears completely, not allowing a single point in the second half. Hamilton has now established itself as a middle of the league program and they have another opportunity to trash a lesser team this weekend. If the Continentals are in similar form on Saturday, things may go their way in Waterville.

Colby has lost 5 straight games to start the season, but not all losses are created equal. Their 35-9 loss to Amherst last weekend was to be expected, but they seem to have more and more positives to build off of as the season goes along. QB Matt Hersch continued to look solid for the Mules despite playing arguably the best team in the conference. Hersch completed 28 passes, resulting in 212 yards and a touchdown. Those numbers are not too shabby considering that he is a freshman, in his 3rd ever start, playing an undefeated team. Their defense left more to be desired as they allowed Amherst to jump out to a 28-0 lead at the half. A much improved second half saw the Mules only allow 7 points and even record a turnover, but the damage had been done a while ago. Colby has been overpowered from the start in each of their previous matchups, but perhaps that is not true this weekend. Despite their blowout last week, Hamilton seems to be the weakest opponent that the Mules have faced to this point. With constant improvement and a decrease in opponent quality, maybe the the Mules can pull off a surprise win at home.

Score Prediction:

Hamilton 31 Colby 24

Bates (0-5) @ Middlebury (3-2)

Conrado Banky might just have his way with the Bobcat defense at home this weekend.

Bates was clearly overmatched by Wesleyan last week, dropping the contest 44-13. The big play plagued their defense, allowing 4 touchdowns on plays of 30 or more yards. Although their defense did give up quite a few big plays, they made one of their own on a 68 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown. In fact, their defense scored half of their points. QB Brendan Costa was basically a non-factor in the game, only amassing 78 yards in the air. Their ground game was equally unimpressive, totaling 79 yards between 5 different carriers. With only 157 yards of offense as a team, Bates never give themselves a chance. After a surprising victory, as a result of much improved defense, Midd will be another tough task for the Bobcats.

Middlebury’s victory over a previously undefeated Williams has to be the upset of the season so far. After Williams beat Trinity, it seemed as if they were the lead candidate for conference champs. Midd was able to turn that narrative around by handing them a clinical 21-10 loss. QB Will Jernigan took over the game, running for one of Midd’s touchdown and throwing for the other two. RB Peter Scibilia was fantastic as well, putting up 143 yards on the ground. The defense is truly what shined for the Panthers this weekend. They held Williams to their least points scored on the season and was able to pick off QB Bobby Maimaron twice as well as force a sack-fumble. Midd was able to shut down the player with the most combined passing and rushing touchdowns in the league, a big turnaround from giving up 52 points to Wesleyan opening weekend. Midd is red hot right now and I would not expect an 0-5 team like Bates to be able to stop them. This should be a fun weekend for Midd fans up in Vermont.

Score Prediction: Middlebury 38 Bates 9

Trinity (4-1) @ Bowdoin (0-5)

The Bantams are going to keep chugging along this weekend.

Trinity bounced back nicely last week, earning themselves a 38-24 come from behind win against Tufts. The Bantams allowed Tufts to jump out to a 14-0 lead after the first quarter, but were able to take control after that. The majority of Trin’s scores came on their ground game. QB Jordan Vazzano rushed for 2 while Max Chipouras and Devante Reid added scores of their own. Vazzano tacked on 220 yards and a touchdown in the air for good measure. After the first quarter the Bantam defense took over, not allowing Tufts a point in the second or third quarter. This was a great momentum shifter for Trinity after suffering their first loss of the season in the previous weekend. The Bantams have proved that they can still beat anyone in the conference and still have an opportunity to clinch yet another conference championship. After last week, Bowdoin should make for very light work.

There are not many positive comments to make about the Polar Bears after they allowed themselves to be demolished by mid-tier program such as Hamilton. Their defense could do absolutely nothing to slow down the Continentals and it more than showed in the scoreline. QB Austin McCrum was able to record 3 touchdowns but continues his woes by being picked off 3 times as well. RB Brendan ward couldn’t get much going either, picking up 81 yards and not reaching the end zone. When you turn the ball over 4 times, as Bowdoin did, you don’t give yourself much of a chance to win. When you allow over 500 yards of offense and 8 touchdowns, you give yourself absolutely no shot at a win. It probably won’t get much better this week as Bowdoin has to face a Trinity team that may be the most talented in the league.

Score Prediction: Trinity 55 Bowdoin 17

Amherst (5-0) @ Wesleyan (3-2)

Andrew Sommer and the Stampede are coming to take their sixth win in as many chances this weekend.

Amherst continued their dominance last week in a 35-9 win over Colby. Amherst played a very simple and efficient game and was able to take home an easy win. QB Ollie Eberth continued to look excellent for the Mammoths, he threw for 194 yards and completed 3 touchdowns. Eberth was able to add another touchdown on the ground to add on to an excellent day. RB Biafra Okoronkwo had an absolute day of it, rushing for 185 yards and a touchdown of his own. Everything about Amherst’s offense was working and they were able to manipulate Colby’s defense with ease. The defense was equally as impressive, forcing the Mules to punt 5 times as well as forcing them to turn the ball over on downs on 4 separate occasions. This Amherst team seems to be the most complete program in the conference and the fact that they are undefeated reflects that. Although Wesleyan is a better team than Colby, there is nothing to prove that Amherst have slowed down at any point this season, or that anyone can beat them.

Wesleyan didn’t face many challenges in their 44-13 win over Bates last weekend. The Cardinals were able to put up 23 points in the third quarter alone while limiting the Bobcats to only one score in each half. It only took QB Mark Piccirillo 10 completions to find the back of the endzone on 3 separate occasions. Piccirillo, Charlie McPhee and Sean Penny were also able to score on the ground, rounding out the 6 touchdowns for the Cardinals. 2 of Piccirillo 3 touchdowns went to WR Dario Highsmith, making him the most targeted red zone receiver on the day. Defensively, Wesleyan was terrific. They only allowed the Bates offense to score on them once, while their other touchdown was on a fumble recovery. Wesleyan stuck to their game plan and it played dividends. Although everything seemed to go Wesleyan’s way last weekend, it will likely be a different story this weekend. Nobody is yet to be Amherst and the Cardinals are likely not going to be the first one. While Wesleyan has appeared to be a dominant team at points in the season, they have not shown that against the top-tier teams in the conference. This weekend is another chance for them to dismiss that narrative and show they can run with the big dogs.

Separation in the Standings: Week 5 Weekend Preview

Bowdoin (0-4) @ Hamilton (1-3)

Bowdoin had another rough go of it last week, getting shut out by Tufts 28-0. Their offense was nearly nonexistent, only being able to total 230 yards on the day. Their rushing game continued to struggle heavily, with RB Brendan Ward being the top rusher who was only able to amass 38 yards. In the air QB Austin McCrum was able to pass for 162 yards but it took him 47 attempts to reach that number and he was only able to connect on 21 of those attempts. One positive that the Polar Bears can take away from last week is that they were able to force two turnovers on a very talented Tufts offense. Hamilton is a winnable game for Bowdoin, and they’re not going to have very many of those this year. If Bowdoin is able to go to New York and steal a win from the Continentals it will no doubt put them in the lead for the race for the CBB.

After a surprise win in week 3, week 4 looked very similar to the beginning of the season for the Continentals. They allowed Trinity to score 44 unanswered points to start the game and were only able to get on the board with a garbage time TD in the 4th quarter. Similar to Bowdoin vs. Tufts, Hamilton’s game versus Trinity was basically over before it started. They allowed over 500 yards of total offense to the Bantams while only collecting 213 themselves. There was a clear difference in quality between the two teams that we have seen many times this NESCAC football season. Although last week may have been rough for Hamilton, they have a golden opportunity this week. QB Kenny Gray has showed that he can dominate the lesser defenses in the league and that is exactly what they have in Bowdoin. Facing a team that can’t do much to slow down offense, or generate much of their own for that matter, I would expect Hamilton to come out and seize the opportunity to put big numbers up on the board.

Score Prediction: Hamilton 35 Bowdoin 10

Colby (0-4) @ Amherst (4-0)

Although it was their 4th loss in a row, the Mules made great progress as a team in their 28-20 loss to Wesleyan. Their offense appeared to have some life to it, being able to put up a season-high 344 yards of total offense. The majority of that offense came from Freshman QB Matt Hersch. Hersch looked extremely solid in his second every collegiate start, passing for 277 yards and 3 touchdowns. I can’t remember the last time that Colby’s passing game had some effectiveness to it, so these stats should be very exciting for Mule fans. RB Jake Schwern had a mediocre day, only being able to pick up 66 yards on 21 attempts. Additionally, this is the first time this season that the Colby defense was able to hold their opponent to less that 30 points. While that may not seem like a very impressive stat, progress is still progress. The Mules should look to build on their successes in week 4 in what will be a very tough road game against one of the best teams in the NESCAC.

Amherst kept their win streak going in a decisive 21-0 shoutout victory against Middlebury last weekend. Amherst’s defense was able to completely shut down Midd’s attack, barely allowing them into field goal range at any point in the game. Nobody on Midd was able to rush for more than 34 yards and it took QB Will Jernigan 32 attempts to amass a mere 133 yards. Offensively, once the Mammoths were able to get inside the redzone, they were able to punch it in with ease. RB Chase Trunell picked up the first two Amherst TDs on runs of only 2 and 3 yards. Their final TD came from their QB, Ollie Eberth, on a 15 yard run. Although their offense did not seem particularly overpowering, it was still more than enough to get the job done over a mid-tier team like Midd. Hosting an 0-4 team this week, look for more inflated numbers on offense and continued dominance on defense from Amherst.

Score Prediction: Amherst 28 Colby 7

Wesleyan (2-2) @ Bates (0-4)

Wesleyan was able to hold onto their early lead against Colby last week and snap their two game winning streak. It wasn’t a particularly pretty game, but a win is a win nonetheless. Once again QB Mark Piccirillo was the heart and soul of the Cardinal offense. He put Wesleyan on the board twice in the air to start the game and then added one on the ground for good measure. Out of Wesleyan’s 361 yards of total offense, Piccirillo accounted for 269 yards. RB Glenn Smith was also excellent for the Cardinals, he was on the receiving end of one of Piccirillo touchdown passes and then punched one in from the goalline late on to secure the Wesleyan win. Defensively, it was not the best showing by the Cardinals considering who their opponent was. Colby’s offense was able to make the game close at the end and seemed to fairly easily work their way through the Cardinal defense at point. Although they were still able to secure the win, it is clear that their defense is not at the same level as some of the more elite teams in the conference. This week’s matchup should be very similar to last week and if Wesleyan is able to avoid any major mistakes they should keep their win streak alive.

It was another tough week for the Bobcats as they were trashed by Williams 31-7. They allowed the Ephs to jump out to an early 17-0 lead in the first quarter and the game was basically over after that. QB Brendan Costa was not able to pass the century mark in the air, falling one short with 99 passing yards on the day. RB Liam Spillane was their top rusher, collecting 72 yards but it took him 24 attempts to do so. Overall, there was not much to write home about for Bates in week 4. There defense didn’t record a single turnover while their offense lost a fumble and Costa was picked twice. It seems as if Bates’ write ups are a broken record at this point. They just don’t seem to be in the same category as the teams they have played thus far and I don’t expect that to change here in week 5. Barring a miracle, it’s going to be another tough weekend in Lewiston.

Score Prediction: Wesleyan 31 Bates 10

Middlebury (2-2) @ Williams (4-0)

Middlebury has shown themselves to be the dictionary definition of a mid-tier team at this point in the season. Against the lesser teams, such as Colby and Bowdoin, they are able to fairly easily take care of business and pick up wins. Against the top teams in the conference, such as Amherst and even Wesleyan, they are overpowered and out matched. Last week’s shoutout loss was an example of the latter. Their offense was lifeless, as it took QB Will Jernigan 32 attempts to throw for a mere 133 yards. Of his 15 completions, none reached the end zone. Their run game was even worse, with 5 players combining to pick up 65 yards on 39 attempts. There was not a lot of upside offensively for the Panthers, but there were some solid takeaways on defense. Midd held Amherst to their second lowest scoring total of the year with 21 points. Additionally, they were able to force a turnover on an Amherst offense that does not give up possession very often. Midd have a tough task ahead of them if they want to stay a .500 team or better after this weekend. Williams is yet to be defeated and it starting to look like it’s going to take some serious luck to do so. Maybe the Middlebury Panthers can summon a little Dillon Panther magic this weekend and dethrone who appears to be the top dog in the CAC.

Another week, another win. That seems to be the motto for the Ephs thus far this season. Last weekend they were able to take the trek up to Maine and keep a winless Bates team at bay with ease. QB Bobby Mamarion was extremely efficient, only tossing the ball 19 times for 2 TDs. RB TJ Dozier ran wild, picking up 151 yards and 2 TDs of his own on only 12 attempts. Mamarion’s favorite target, WR Frank Stola, was able to get in on the fun too. Stola picked up 74 yards and a TD on only 5 catches. The Ephs are absolutely rolling on both sides of the ball and it seems as if nobody can stop them. A home game may as well be an automatic win at this point for Williams as they are 2-0, most notably with a win against defending champs Trinity. This week should be pretty cut and dry for the Ephs. Keep the same game plan and mentality and there should be no reason why they don’t walk away with their perfect record in tact.

Score Prediction: Williams 24 Midd 10

Can we keep the upsets coming? Week 4 Weekend Preview

Week 3 brought us some score lines that were not be expected to say the least. Hamilton came out of nowhere to take down Wesleyan and Williams was able to keep Trin at bay, which previously seemed impossible. I, for one, am extremely excited about these upsets which changed the landscape of a previously extremely predictable NESCAC football season. Here’s to week 4, and hopefully a few more unexpected results.

Wesleyan (1-2) @ Colby (0-3)

The last time that Wesleyan had a losing record through week 3 was all the way back in 2009, after a week 3, 16-13 overtime loss to none other than the Colby Mules. Wesleyan’s poor start was not expected to say the least. After coming out guns blazing in week 1 versus Midd, the Cardinals just haven’t had what it takes to finish out a game. A wildly unexpected loss to Hamilton last week has brought Wesleyan to a crossroads They can either devolve as a team here and turn a potential NESCAC championship season to a wate, or they can analyze their issues and salvage what they can. Wesleyan allowed Hamilton QB Kenny Gray to tear them apart last weekend, accounting for 4 TDs. Although Colby is not known for their passing game, there is clearly some sloppy D that needs to be corrected by the Cardinals. Additionally, the run game has looked below average for Wesleyan, averaging barely over 3 yards an attempt last weekend. We know Wesleyan’s offense can be potent based upon week 1 but they just haven’t seemed to have the same fire the last two weeks. A game against the Mules should be a good opportunity for Wesleyan to work on their issues and figure out what needs tweaking. Despite this, don’t sleep on Wesleyan against teams like Amherst and Williams, they still may have what it takes to dethrone the top teams in the league.

Wesleyan has very little shot at a ring after their shocking loss in week 3, but how will they respond?

Colby comes in to this contest 0-3, which is never a good sign. The Mules certainly made progress against Midd last week, which was a close 10-7 score until late in the 4th quarter when the game absolutely exploded to result in a 31-14 finish. Freshman QB Matt Hersh got his first career start and established a semi-effective passing game for the Mules, accounting for 182 yards and 2 TDs while allowing 2 interceptions. RB Jake Schwern was the workhorse per usual, having nearly 30 carries but only resulting in 82 yards. CJ Hassan and Chase Goode were each able to record a pic for the Mules, both of which helped keep the game close until late. It’s very hard to win a football game when you turn the ball over 5 times and the Mules know that better than anybody. Ball security is a major issue and has not seemed to be addressed thus far this season. Colby should take this weekend as an opportunity to steal a game from a struggling Wesleyan team. As we learned last week, anything can happen.

Colby is coming off a surprisingly competitive game against Midd. Now they play a team with weakened spirits.

Score Prediction: Wesleyan 38 Colby 14

Williams (3-0) @ Bates (0-3)

Williams has to be feeling good after taking down defending champs Trinity in Williamstown last weekend. Their defense was terrific, holding Trinity to only field goals until a minute left in the 4th quarter. A previously intimidating Bantam offense looked weak against the Ephs. Ben Anthony and TJ Rothmann were both able to pickoff wonderboy Jordan Vazzano and their offense didn’t turn over the ball once. Williams has established their dominance in the CAC and should have an extremely easy time this weekend against a Bates team that has given up 47 and 52 points in their last two matchups. Bates gave up 59 to Trin and Williams beat Trin, by the transitive property, this game could be ugly. Expected QB Bobby Maimaron to continue being dominant and the Williams D to continue to shut down their opponent, this game should be an easy one for the Ephs.

Bates had another rough week in Medford, allowing 37 points unanswered in the second half. To give the Bobcats some credit, they did give Jumbos fans a scare with their 14-10 halftime lead. QB Brendan Costa was decent, throwing for 160 yards and a TD, but it was not nearly enough to counter Tufts. Their run game was abysmal, only picking up 38 yards as a team, 30 of which were Costa’s. When your QB accounts for 96% of your total offense, you’re going to be pretty easy to stop. Without a real running back, Bates’ offense is stagnant at best and the Jumbos were able to figure that out at halftime and exploit the hell out of it. If I were the Bobcats I would brace for impact because it’s going to be another rough week in Lewiston.

Score Prediction: Williams 52 Bates 13

Trinity (2-1) @ Hamilton (1-2)

Trinity needs to lock down this weekend to keep their championship hopes alive.

A week ago this time, this would’ve been a completely different ballgame. Trinity was 2-0 and absolutely rolling. They had scored 94 points and only given up 16 through two weeks, those are some wild numbers. It seemed as if nobody could stop them, until they took a trip to Williamstown. Jordan Vazzano looked completely different, throwing 2 pics and only completing 14 of his 43 attempts. RB Max Chipouras was held to 3.6 yds/attempt and 0 touchdowns. What happened to that electrifying offense that we know and love (or hate)? Their defense took a hit too, not recording a single turnover and allowing 4.5 yards/play. Has Trinity lost its edge, or is Williams simply far better than we had thought? We’ll have the answer to that question after Saturday’s game.

We witnessed an absolute stunner last weekend as Hamilton was able to pull out a last-second upset against Wesleyan. QB Kenny Gray was amazing to say the least, passing for 193 yards and 4 TDs. RB Joe Park made good use of his attempts, rushing for 103 yards on only 18 attempts. A Continental offense that had been held to only 16 points in their first two games had suddenly come to life. Now the question is, can this kind of offense be sustained against an elite defense such as Trinity? Despite their loss last week, Trinity has still only allowed 12.7 pts/game and it will not be an easy feat to take them down. Hamilton’s defense was solid, picking off QB Mark Piccirillo once and doing just enough to keep their newfound offense in the game. Although Wesleyan’s offense is solid, Trinity will be a whole ‘nother beasts for the Continentals to conquer. I’d keep this game on upset alert, but no promises.

Score Prediction: Trinity 31 Hamilton 17

Tufts (3-0) @ Bowdoin (0-3)

Another week, another win for the Jumbos. Tufts have continued to prove that they have one of, if not the best, defenses in the league. They made easy work of Bates in their 47-14 victory. Although fans may have had a bit of a scare at halftime, as they were down 14-10, a change of strategy allowed Tufts to put up 37 points while allowing none in the second half. The Jumbos spread the ball around efficiently, having 4 different players rush for touchdowns and 2 different receivers hauling in TDs. All in all, it was a pretty easy week for Tufts. Whenever you have nearly 350 more yards of offense than your opponent things are going well, and things are going very well in Medford. I think Tufts has the most well-rounded team in the NESCAC and they have proved that in every week of play. Similar to Bates, Bowdoin shouldn’t be much of a challenge for the Jumbos. Expect another crooked scoreboard and another solid week for Tufts.

Rounding out the 0-3 CBB teams is Bowdoin. One positive aspect that the Polar Bears can take away from last week’s 24-12 loss to Amherst is that QB Austin McCrum looks like he’s starting to settle in and had a much better week than his first two. His 242 yards and 2 TDs are a solid stat line, but unfortunately he didn’t have any help from the running game. After a monster week 2, RB Nate Richam just couldn’t get anything going in week 3. He rushed for a mere 30 yards on 16 attempts, miles away from his 288 yard, 2 TD performance against Midd. It seems as if Bowdoin has one side of their offense going one week and the other the next. If they were able to get both the running and passing game going simultaneously, this may be a completely different team. Defensively, there was not much to write home about. When you allow 493 yards per game, the worst in the league, you don’t give your offense much of a chance. For Bowdoin, and Bates and Colby for that matter, it’s pretty clear that they only thing they have to compete for this year is the CBB crown. For Bowdoin fans that means praying for upsets until the last two weeks of the season, when the games actually count.

Score Prediction: Tufts 54 Bowdoin 14

College Football is Back: Weekend Preview 9/15

If I told you that Urban Meyer has the second highest winning percentage of any active college football coach that has coached 10+ years, who would you think has the highest? Probably Nick Saban, right? Actually, the answer is Jeff Devanney of Trinity College. When most people think of college football powerhouses they think of Alabama, Ohio State, and Clemson. I think of Trinity, Amherst, and Middlebury. The real college football is finally back and it’s shaping up to be an exciting year with more teams in contention than usual. The NESCAC has been very stratified in recent years, but we anticipate that there will start a bit more parity this season as the weaker teams are beginning to make some changes, and the top teams have lost some of their stars. It’s year two of the ninth game, so now teams should be adjusting to the shorter preseason since they’ve had a chance to experiment once already. Let’s see how the matchups look for Week 1 of the new season:

Williams @ Bowdoin, Brunswick, ME

Bobby Maimaron will look to pick up right where he left off last season (Courtesy of Williams Athletics)

Two years ago, these teams both finished 0-8, leaving a sour taste in their mouths as they looked to get back on track the following season. Williams was able to do more than just get back on track, as they surprised everyone with a 6-3 finish. Unfortunately, Bowdoin was unable to right the ship as they struggled even more, finishing 0-9. The Ephs feature a pair of star sophomores in QB Bobby Maimaron ’21 and WR Frank Stola ’21 who broke into the NESCAC scene with huge freshman seasons. They’ll be asked to carry a strong offense with very high expectations after such a successful 2017 campaign. The big question for the Polar Bears will be who is going to start at quarterback since they return both QB’s from last year’s team and welcome Lafayette transfer Austin McCrum. Aside from that there doesn’t appear to be a whole lot of change for a team that really needs it. Even with the addition at quarterback, I don’t see this being the week that things start to turn around in Brunswick.

Prediction: Williams 31, Bowdoin 14

Middlebury @ Wesleyan, Middletown, CT

As far as Week 1 matchups go, this is as big as it gets. Our game of the week features perennial title contenders Middlebury and Wesleyan as they’ll go to battle again this year right out of the gates. Wesleyan returns star quarterback Mark Piccirillo ’19 who led the league in passing last year in just about every category, but they lose their top receiving threat in Mike Breuler ’18 (who led the league in receiving in just about every category) as well as 4 of their top 5 receivers. It’ll be interesting to see how Piccirillo fares, as he has to make relationships with an entirely new group of receivers. On the other hand, Middlebury lost their star quarterback Jared Lebowitz ’18, but return the entirety of their very strong receiving corps, headlined by Conrado Banky ’19, Jimmy Martinez ’19, and Frank Cosolito ’20. They’ll have to make it easy on first-time starter Jack Meservy ’19, who was able to put up some impressive numbers last season playing behind Lebowitz. It’ll be tough to start against a defense as strong as Wesleyan, but I think Meservy is up for the challenge. The Panthers’ strong team rapport tips the balance because I think it’ll take the Cardinals a week or two to find their identity this season.

Prediction: Middlebury 31, Wesleyan 28

Tufts @ Hamilton, Clinton, NY

These teams each feature very talented – albeit inconsistent – quarterbacks who are in position to have big seasons. Both teams have the capability to compete with anyone, but haven’t been able to string together consecutive strong performances. Maybe it’s because I just wrote the team preview for the Continentals, but I really like their defense. Tyler Hudson ’19 is one of the best defensive players in the league, and he leads a unit that now has a few years of experience together. This is their year to prove that they belong, and it starts against a quarterback in Ryan McDonald ’19 who is notoriously turnover-prone. Losing to the same team twice in a row isn’t fun – especially when it’s in overtime. Hamilton isn’t going to let that happen again. I’m ready to hop on their bandwagon.

Prediction: Hamilton 28, Tufts 24

Amherst @ Bates, Lewiston, ME

We’ll have to wait and see if Brendan Costa is ready to make the transition from a run-first to a pass-first offense (Courtesy of Bates Athletics)

Bates is experiencing more change than any team from 2017 to 2018 as they hired a new coach who put in a new offense. This is very promising for a team that underachieved last season, has an up and coming quarterback in Brendan Costa ’21, and a wide receiver who has a chance to make an immediate impact in Derek Marino ’22. Unfortunately, they start the 2018 campaign against one of the league’s best. Amherst has won 3 of the last 5 NESCAC championships and look like the favorites again this season. Andrew Yamin ’19 could very well be the defensive player of the year and he leads the league’s top defense against a team who will be playing their first game with a new offensive scheme. The Mammoths also return their top offensive threats in tailback Jack Hickey ’19 and wide receiver James O’Regan ’20 who will help walk game manager Ollie Eberth ’20 through the full 60 minutes. The Bobcats have potential and their massive system changes will be beneficial in the long run, but they won’t be ready this early to take on an opponent as strong as Amherst.

Prediction: Amherst 33, Bates 13

Trinity @ Colby, Waterville, ME

We don’t know who will be under center for Trinity tomorrow (probably Jordan Vazzano ’21), but it doesn’t really matter. Whoever it is, they’ll be able to either hand it to Max Chipouras ’19 who will probably find his way into the end zone or throw it to Koby Schofer ’20 or Jonathan Girard ’21 who will likely find their way into the end zone, too. Colby made the right move in getting Jack Cosgrove to be their next head coach, but it’s almost not fair that his first game is against Trinity. The Mules have nowhere near the amount of talent as the Bantams, but it’ll be important to see that they’re making strides in the right direction for when they face a more formidable opponent. I’d like to see Bernie Sander ’21 catch a few passes, as he’s one of the most promising receivers on the Colby roster. Plus I’m going to love referring to him as “The Senator.” This one is going to be a blowout, but at least there will be nowhere to go but up.

Prediction: Trinity 45, Colby 7

Appleton Bound? Amherst NCAA Baseball Regional Preview

Auburn Regional (New York Region) – Hosted by #9 Cortland

After earning the NESCAC automatic NCAA tournament bid, preventing Tufts from collecting their third straight conference title, the Amherst Mammoths will venture down to Falcon Park in Auburn, New York. Falcon Park is the home of #9 SUNY Cortland and the site for this year’s DIII baseball New York regional. Other notable teams include #10 Salisbury, out of Maryland, and #24 Southern Maine. NCAA regionals are a double-elimination tournament, much like the NESCAC playoffs. The winner of the regional will represent the New York Region at the 2018 DIII World Series in Appleton, Wisconsin.

First Opponent – #24 Southern Maine

Southern Maine finished 3rd in the Little East Conference this season, behind Eastern Connecticut and #3 UMass – Boston. Southern Maine finished 4-1 against NESCAC opponents this season, beating Bates and Colby in mid-week games and splitting games against Bowdoin. The USM Huskies are lead offensively by Devin Warren ‘19, who is hitting .401 with 31 RBI, and Dylan Hapworth ‘20, who has a .338 AVG and 8 home runs. Jake Dexter ‘19, whose father Tom is a baseball and football coach at Colby College, has been doing absolutely everything for the Huskies this season. At the plate he is hitting .387 with 28 RBI and on the mound he is USM’s #1 arm out of the ‘pen, maintaining a 1.67 ERA and 11.13 K/9. Amherst will most likely face Gage Feeney ‘20 who is 6-1 on the season with a 3.18 ERA. Southern Maine is no stranger to good competition as they have the 21st best strength of schedule in the nation, compared to Amherst’s 164th, per herosports.com.

Amherst is headed to a loaded regional.

Amherst will likely send out Sam Schneider ‘18 to face the Huskies as he has been their ace all year long. Schneider has started to stand out down the stretch in this playoff run, throwing 7 ⅔ strong innings against Bates in game 1 of the NESCAC playoffs and will have had 6 days of rest between that appearance and their contest versus USM. Amherst’s and USM’s staffs match up very evenly on paper. Amherst has a team ERA of 3.58 while USM’s team ERA is 3.82. They both have solid starters that should keep them in the game for 6+ innings and bullpens who have consistently kept the leads that their starters have given them this season. Offensively, Southern Maine has the clear advantage over Amherst. While both clubs have team averages in the low .300s, USM has been getting it done in style. The Huskies have belted 29 home runs as a team this season, compared to Amherst’s 11. The Mammoths will need to keep USM inside the ballpark in order for them to move past game 1 of the regional unscathed.

Game 2

If Amherst manages to take down USM, they will face the winner of #10 Salisbury vs. St. Joseph’s (L.I.). If Amherst loses to USM, they will face the loser of #10 Salisbury vs. St. Joseph’s (L.I.).

Salisbury enters the tournament after receiving an automatic bid as champions of the Capital Athletic Conference. The Salisbury Seagulls are on a 8-game winning streak, which is tied for the 5th longest active winning streak in D3 baseball and are the clear favorite to win their opening round game. They enter the tournament white-hot after sweeping through their conference tournament, scoring 49 runs and giving up just 7 in 5 games. Jack Barry ‘19 has been an offensive juggernaut for the Seagulls, boasting a .423 AVG and dropping a team-leading 8 bombs thus far. Salisbury’s offense is good, but their pitching is what makes them great. The Capital Athletic Conference is a hitter’s conference, nearly every team has averages above .300 and ERAs above 5.00. Salisbury has a conference-best 3.38 ERA, which is really what separates them from the competition. Their staff is spearheaded by Connor Reeves ‘18, who has the most wins in the nation at 13. Reeves also is 9th nationally in ERA at 1.22, 6th in strikeouts with 103 and 1st in innings pitched with 110 ⅔ (the NESCAC leader in IP has 64.1 for reference). If having one clear All-American wasn’t enough for Salisbury, how about two? Austin Heenan ‘18,  a DI transfer from Virginia Military Institute, is 10-3 on the season, tied for 2nd most wins in the nation, with a 2.33 ERA. Heenan has racked up 110 strikeouts this season, which is also 2nd best in the nation. If Amherst were to face Salisbury in game 2, which would likely only occur given the Mammoths take game 1, they would have to face Heenan. While Amherst has seen their fair share of quality arms this year, All-American caliber players such as Reeves and Heenan are hard to come by, and even harder to beat.

Most likely, if Amherst loses game 1 they will face St. Joseph’s (L.I.). The Golden Eagles earned their NCAA tournament berth through capturing the Skyline Conference playoff title. Prior to their conference final against Merchant Marine, St. Joseph’s was riding an impressive 11-game win streak. The St. Joe’s lineup is headlined by Paul Britt ‘19, who transferred from host SUNY Cortland after his freshman year. Britt is hitting .406 and leads the team in homeruns (7) and RBI (35). The Golden Eagles have an extremely productive core in their lineup, but are not great top-to-bottom as many teams who fare well nationally are. On the mound, St. Joe’s has had 9 different guys start games for them and are usually quick to pull the trigger and head to the bullpen. Nick Clemente ‘18 has logged the most innings on the staff this year with 54 ⅔, a miniscule number compared to Salisbury’s #1 and #2. The Golden Eagles would be a very even matchup for Amherst, should they square off. Both teams have guys who are excellent individually, but the team as a whole doesn’t stick out in the very talented group in this regional.

Beyond Game 2

If the Mammoths are lucky enough to make it past 2 games, as Tufts was unable to do last year, they could face any combination of the remaining teams in the regional. #9 SUNY Cortland won their first national championship back in 2015 and has competed in 26 straight NCAA tournaments. Baldwin Wallace won the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament and has now made the NCAA tournament in 3 of their last 5 seasons. Swarthmore upset a very talented Johns Hopkins team to win their conference and currently hold a school-best 33 wins on the year. Finally, Westfield State captured the Massachusetts Small College Athletic Conference title to make their first NCAA tournament since 2009.

Overall, the majority of the teams at this regional simply outclass Amherst. The Mammoths could certainly compete against teams like Westfield State, Swarthmore, St Joseph’s and maybe even Baldwin Wallace. When it comes to teams such as Southern Maine, Salisbury and Cortland; Amherst would need to pull off a small miracle to walk away with a victory.

But since they are our only NESCAC team left, we believe in the Mammoths. Did anybody see Davidson College’s remarkable playoff run last year? Crazier things have happened, so keep reading to see how these academic weapons can keep the dream alive:

Amherst’s Strengths, Weaknesses and X-Factor

Strengths:

  • The boys are hot: Amherst is on a 5-game winning streak that includes 2 crucial wins against Midd to take them to the NESCAC playoffs and then 2 more impressive wins over two-time reigning champs Tufts.
  • Senior Leadership: The core of the Amherst lineup is Max Steinhorn ‘18, Ariel Kenney ‘18 and Harry Roberson ‘18. These boys have been grinding together for 4 years to reach this point and will not go out without a bang. They set the bar high for their teammates and challenge them to perform to their full potential. Senior leadership is an invaluable asset for any team and Amherst is full of it.

Sam Schneider is ready to go this weekend after back-to-back gems.
  • Their Bullpen: Similarly, Stephen Burke ‘21 has started his career off hot. In his 13 appearances he is 3-0 with a 2.79 ERA. Zach Brown has also been a major player for Amherst, putting up a 1.76 ERA and 11.74 K/9 in his 9 appearances, despite lots of unearned runs and a lack of control. He can dominate if he locates his curveball, because his heat probably won’t phase these hitters as much as it did earlier this year. Mike Dow has also had a phenomenal statistical season with 7 saves, but has had some wild pitches and hit batters in his last few outings. If he keeps it together emotionally, Amherst will be good to go as his stuff is effective and he generally locates well. When it is time to hand the ball over to the ‘pen, Amherst has some great resources at their disposal which could help them further themselves in the NCAA tournament.

Weaknesses:

  • Quality of Competition: While it is a great feat in-and-of itself to capture the NESCAC title, the competition Amherst has faced has not prepared them for the level of talent they are about to go up against. No team that Amherst has faced this year is in the top-25, let alone any team that they have beaten. In a regional that has 3 top-25 teams, including 2 in the top-10, Amherst is facing competition unlike any they have seen this year.
  • Power: Amherst’s 11 home runs ranks last among all the teams at the regional. Alex Marcum ‘18 (Baldwin Wallace), Dudley Taw ‘20 (Baldwin Wallace) and Anthony Crowley ‘19 (Westfield St.) all have more home runs individually than Amherst does as a team. In high-stakes playoff environments such as the NCAA Regionals home runs can be a huge momentum shifter and Amherst simply doesn’t have to pop to produce many of them. Especially against high-quality arms, which they will be facing plenty of, it will be tough to string together hits, so the long ball becomes a much needed tool that Amherst doesn’t have access to.
  • Experience: Only the Seniors on this Amherst team have had the taste of NCAA playoffs. Amherst made the NCAA Regionals with an at-large bid back in 2015 after losing the NESCAC Championship to Wesleyan. That regional was also hosted by Cortland and the Mammoths went 1-2 in regional play, including a loss to eventual national champion Cortland. Many of the other teams in this regional consistently make the tournament or play in higher quality conferences, no offense NESCAC, that regularly get more than one team into NCAA Regionals. The lack of postseason experience could serve to hurt Amherst as they will be going in a huge underdog compared to many of the programs they will be facing.

X-Factor

  • Ariel Kenney ‘18:

    Ariel Kenney ’18

Kenney started off the season hot and is my pick for West Player of the Year, but as of late he has cooled down significantly. In his last 8 games he is 5 for 29 (.172 AVG) and has had no extra base hits. Kenney has been a key part of the Mammoth lineup all season and if they wanted to outperform their expectations for this regional he’s going to have to break out of this slump and play like he was at the beginning of the season. Now is as tough a time as ever to break out of a slump, as he will be facing the best pitching he has seen all year and possibly in his career, but if he can’t go back to his POY ways, it is more than likely that Amherst will not make it too far in the regional.

Prediction

I believe that Amherst will drop their first game against Southern Maine and the rally to beat St. Joseph’s (L.I.) in their second game. Southern Maine’s pitching is not dominant, so the Mammoths certainly have a chance, however. Amherst’s staff is not deep enough to carry them for more than 2 or 3 games in such a short time-span so it is more than likely that whoever the Mammoths face in game 3, if they are lucky enough to make it that far, will get the better of them. That being said, as representatives of the NESCAC I will be rooting for Amherst to exceed my expectations and help to put NESCAC baseball back on the map. Good luck Mammoths.

What You Gotta Know: Amherst vs. Middlebury Series Breakdown

While everybody is looking towards the playoffs, there is still one series and one playoff spot on the line. Middlebury and Amherst are playing for their playoff lives with everything on the line this weekend. Read more to find out what you need to know before Saturday’s doubleheader:

Location: Forbes Field – Middlebury, VT

While Middlebury has only played 5 of their 28 games at home this season, they’ve certainly had success when playing on their own diamond. On the season Midd sits at 4-1 in all home contests, thanks to their current 4 game win streak at home. On the other side of the equation, Amherst has only had 7 away games this year and they are 4-3 in those contests, most notably beating Wesleyan 2 games out of 3 on the road. Overall I’d give the Panthers a slight advantage being on their home turf, but Amherst has clearly shown that they can get it done on the road, so home field advantage will not be enough to take them down.

Probable Starters:

Game 1: Colby Morris ‘19 (Middlebury) 4-4, 1.92 ERA vs Andrew Ferrero ‘19 (Amherst) 3-1, 2.19 ERA

Colby Morris ’19

Andrew Ferrero ’19

Game 2: Robert Erickson ‘18 (Middlebury) 3-2, 3.19 ERA vs Sam Schneider ‘18 (Amherst) 3-2, 3.22 ERA

Rob Erickson ’18

Sam Schneider ’18

Game 3: George Goldstein ‘21 (Middlebury) 2-0, 1.02 ERA vs Davis Brown ‘19 (Amherst) 5-2, 3.80 ERA

George Goldstein ’21

Davis Brown ’19

Game 1 of this series features two of the top pitchers in the conference this year in Morris and Ferrero. Both are Juniors, Bay Area natives (despite the fact that Morris lists himself as from Del Mar, which is fake news) (Editor’s Note: It is not fake news) and are enjoying the best years of their careers thus far. Game 1 should be a tight, low-scoring contest and will come down to which one of these aces can go the distance for their team. I would give Morris the advantage over Ferrero because he has been able to go CG in 2 of his 3 NESCAC games so far and has maintained a stellar 1.23 ERA in conference this year. Before Amherst’s loss against Hamilton I would have said that the game two matchup should be very close as well. But after giving up 6 earned in 3+ innings Davis Brown will likely have his start pushed to Sunday. That leaves the task up to Sam Schneider ’18 who will be making his last NESCAC start. Schneider got bounced after one inning against Hamilton and put up quality starts in his other two outings and is by no means a lock for success. On the other hand, Erickson has been able to hold all NESCAC West opponents to 3 runs or less per start so far this year. If both teams maintain their same rotation as last week then game 2 should be lopsidedly in favor of Middlebury. Game 3 looks to be an absolute wildcard as it pits Freshman George Goldstein, who only has one career start, against either Brown or an Amherst bullpen arm. Goldstein’s only career start came last week against Hamilton where he was able to go 5 strong, scoreless innings to get the final win of the series sweep for the Panthers. Despite Goldstein’s stellar numbers, because he didn’t go more than five innings in his start, he leaves a lot up to the Middlebury bullpen. This

Key Players:

 Middlebury

Hayden Smith ‘20: .382/.452/.461, 21 RBI, 6 XBH

Justin Han ‘20: .367/.528/.456, 18 RBI, 27 BB, 20SB

Brooks Carroll ‘20: .311/.376/.427, 12 RBI, 9 XBH, 15SB

Amherst

Ariel Kenney ‘18: .420/.496/.670, 21 RBI, 4 HR, 11 BB

Max Steinhorn ‘18: .391/.458/.461, 16 RBI, 6 XBH, 14 SB

Harry Roberson ‘18: .316/.421/.429, 11 2B, 24 RBI, 16 BB

Numbers-wise, Amherst’s offense is clearly superior to Midd’s. Lead by a trio of Seniors, Amherst currently has the best team batting average in the conference at .304 while Midd sits in 6th at .267. One thing that both of these teams do especially well is run the bases. Midd leads the conference by a significant margin with their 72 bags swiped while Amherst is 3rd with their 53 stolen bases. Interestingly, when it comes to away games for the Mammoths, their team average is less than 10 points lower than it is for home games, showing that they are not intimidated on the road. Luckily for Middlebury, their team average goes up nearly 80 points when they are on their home field, which may provide some of the offense that Midd has seemed to be lacking all season. Overall, I think that Amherst has a clear offensive advantage over Middlebury and Midd will need to use the leverage of their home field advantage, as well as their current 9 game win streak, in their favor in order to be able to match the Mammoth’s outstanding plate presence.

Series History (Since 2007)

Overall:

Amherst: 25-9

Middlebury 9-25

Home:

Amherst: 11-4

Middlebury: 5-10

 Away:

Amherst: 10-5

Middlebury 4-11

 Neutral:

Amherst: 4-0

Middlebury 0-4

It’s fairly clear to see that over the past decade or so Amherst has dominated their matchup against Midd. Both the home and away numbers are very similar for both teams, showing that home field advantage has not played all too much of a role in their past meetings. Although last year Midd was able to take 2 of 3 games from the Mammoths in Massachusetts and Middlebury made a much further playoff run than Amherst, so perhaps we are seeing a cultural shift happening in Vermont that is trending in the right direction. Despite the fact that history would choose Amherst over Midd by a long shot, with the recent momentum Midd has gained as well as their success last season against Amherst, this series will certainly be much tighter than it has been in years past.

What’s on the Line (Playoff Scenarios)

Amherst: After a devastating loss to Hamilton on Thursday, the Mammoths now need to get a series win on the road in order to secure their playoff spot. Anything less than 2 wins would have Amherst go from the #1 seed to a team that will miss the playoffs entirely. If the Mammoths are able to take 2 games from Midd they will salvage their playoff spot and retain their status as the #1 seed.

Middlebury: Hamilton’s win over Amherst was a godsend for the Panthers as Midd’s comeback from last in the division is nearly complete. All Middlebury needs now is a series win at home to come all the way back from their rocky start. 2 wins or more will see Middlebury make the playoffs as the #2 seed, something that seemed unfathomable just weeks ago.
