Who’s the Real Deal?: Weekend Preview 4/5

Weekend Preview April 5th

Williams (12-1, 0-0 NESCAC) vs Amherst (9-2, 1-2)

Friday @ Amherst

Saturday Doubleheader @ Williams

After losing a close series to Wesleyan last weekend, Amherst will have a chance at redemption as they will open up a 3 game series versus in-state rival Williams. All three games that the Mammoths played last weekend were close ones and unfortunately for them they found themselves on the wrong side of two of them. Dan Lombardo ’19 provided a quality start for Amherst in the final game of the series and Jake Alonzo ’20 came in and pitched a scoreless 2 ⅔ innings to earn his first save of the year and salvage a NESCAC win for the Mammoths. One of the biggest surprises for Amherst this year has been the success of freshman Daniel Qin ’22. He is hitting at a .426 clip and has an OPS over 1.150. Despite his 0-2 record, Senior Andrew Ferrero ’19 is having a solid season thus far, maintaining an ERA of 2.08 while only allowing 4 walks in his 13IP. Amherst has the opportunity to make a playoff run but they will need more pieces to the puzzle than they have now. While Williams has not officially entered NESCAC play, taking 2 non-conference games from Colby last weekend, they have been nothing but impressive in their games thus far. Their 12-1 record is due, in no small part, to the explosiveness of their offense which has been on display this spring. Senior Doug Schaffer ’19 is playing out of his mind, putting up a slash line of .571/.571/.816. He is second in the conference in hits and slugging percentage, fourth in doubles and leads the league in RBI and batting average. When a guy in on a tear like that it is tough for his teammates to not want to get in on the fun. Sophomore Erik Pappas ’21 has also been impressive, scoring 23 runs and batting .468. As a team the Ephs are hitting .343 so it is safe to conclude that hitting is in fact infectious. Although the team era for Williams is not as impressive as their average, it does not matter so much when your opponent ERA is above 8.5.

Prediction: Williams takes 2 out of 3

Hamilton (8-8, 1-2 NESCAC) @ Wesleyan (8-9, 2-1 NESCAC)

All @ Wesleyan

Ethan Wallis has been off to a very hot start for the Continentals

Hamilton will return from their sunny spring break in Florida to face off against Wesleyan in their second NESCAC contest of the year. In their previous contest the Continentals were able to take one game out of three from Middlebury. This was in large part to Gavin Schafer-Hood ’21, who continued to pitch great in a complete-game one run victory. When it comes to swinging the bats Hamilton has struggled more than most. Leading the pace for the Continentals is sophomore Ethan Wallis ’21 who is posting an impressive .409 batting average. He is also the lone Continental to go yard this season. Hamilton will be looking for a chance to right the ship in what will be a difficult matchup with Wesleyan. While Wesleyan’s non-conference record seemed to be less than impressive heading into NESCAC play, it didn’t seem to matter as they were able to come in and get their first series win of the new campaign. Solid pitching is what propelled the Cardinals, only allowing 7 runs in the 3 game series. Kelvin Sosa ’21 collected the win in the first game while Dan Lombardo ’19 took game two. Offensively Wesleyan’s top performer has been Andrew Kauf ’20. Kauf is batting .426 and leads the team with 20 RBIs (10 more than second place). Wesleyan seems to be an upperclassmen heavy team who knows when to get hot. They could be very dangerous this season.

Prediction: Wesleyan takes 2 out of 3

Bowdoin (0-14-1, 0-3 NESCAC) vs Colby (6-6, 0-0 NESCAC)

Saturday doubleheader @ Colby, Sunday @ Bowdoin

The Colby College Mules enter this series with no previous NESCAC experience, although they did play Williams in two non-conference matchups. Colby had what looked to be a much improved spring break compared to last year as they are already just one win away from matching their season total last year. Lots of thanks is due to their much improved offense. Junior Will Wessman leads the team in hits, doubles, runs, RBIs and home runs. They do not seem to have two or three key starters in the rotation but rather there seem to be 7 or 8 guys who could take the mound to start the game. Perhaps this strategy will play as the spring break schedule has come to an end, but who’s to say? Their team ERA is still a little high, which will hurt them in NESCAC play. Although the transition to NESCAC play can be tough at times, Colby gets a very easy transition in the form of Bowdoin. Not much has seemed to go right for the Polar Bears this season. They are yet to win a game through 15 total contests. They are batting below .215 as a team and their team ERA is near 8. I am not really sure what their is to praise or say about this team. It has got to be tough to watch and even tougher to participate in. I would give most teams an automatic sweep, but given the rivalry and Colby’s problems in NESCAC play last season, nothing is guaranteed.

Prediction: Colby wins 2 out of 3

Trinity (14-2, 3-0 NESCAC) @ Bates (6-9, 1-2 NESCAC)

Johnny Stamatis is one of the most dangerous hitters in the NESCAC this year

The Bantams are riding high right now, entering this series maintaining an 11 game win streak. This streak includes a clean sweep of Bowdoin to start their NESCAC play. Not only are they shining in NESCAC play, but in non-conference games they have some quality wins like their win over MIT. Nearly every guy up and down the lineup is hitting over .300 and it shows in their offensive production. Their 5 states that they rotate between have all been solid as well, maintaining ERAs between 2 and 4. Trinity appears to be a well-rounded team that has the talent and capabilities to go deep into the playoffs. Bates did not fare quite as well in their first NESCAC series. Tufts was able to take the first two games but the Bobcats managed to snatch the last game, which was a close one. Bates had an underwhelming preseason which does not project to a particularly exciting or prosperous conference play. While they may have individual players such as Christian Beal ’21 or Nolan Collins ’20 who can shine on their own, as a team they don’t seem to have what it takes to make it deep this year.

Prediction: Trinity sweeps

Three-Headed Monster: NESCAC East Preview

NESCAC East Preview

Bates College Bobcats

Head Coach: Jon Martin, 3rd Season
2018 Record: 14-19, 7-5 NESCAC
Projected 2019 Record: 20-14, 7-5 NESCAC

Player to Watch: Jack Arend ‘20 (C) Newfields, NH

Arend was a consistent presence in the lineup and on the field for the Bobcats last season. His efforts throughout the season garnered him first team all NESCAC honors, a title he will look to reclaim this season. Arend is known for his good eye and plate discipline, leading the Bobcats in walks and OBP last year. He’s already off to a blistering start through 11 games this season, hitting .469 while reaching base at a .617 clip. It is clear that Arend will be a key leader for Bates this year and has the potential to take them back to the playoffs.

Pitcher to Watch: Nolan Collins ‘20, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA

Nolan Collins returns for his junior season and the California native projects to be one of the top starters in the conference this season. After a breakout sophomore campaign in which he kept his season ERA below 3, Collins will need to maintain a similar standard of excellence this season to make it out of the NESCAC East. After a large K/9 jump between 2017 and 2018, I would expect strikeout numbers for Collins to rise even further this year, ever increasing his effectiveness. As the surefire ace for this squad, the Bobcats will rely heavily on the right arm of Nolan Collins every Friday afternoon in some of their biggest games this year.

Everything Else:

Last season Bates was fortunate enough to earn a playoff berth but they failed to get further than that. Close losses saw the Bobcats fall short of their championship hopes, but it is a new year. Although they were a playoff team, Bates finished third to last in the conference in runs last season. Their offensive production will have to beefed up significantly this year in order to compete for a championship, but they have solid pieces to put it together. In fact, their .301 team batting average thus far indicates that they’ve already begun to right the ship.

Bowdoin College Polar Bears

Head Coach: Mike Connolly, 20th Season
2018 Record: 16-17, 7-5 NESCAC
2019 Projected Record: 8-26-1, 2-10 NESCAC

Player to Watch: Eric Mah ‘20 (IF) Newtonville, MA

After a sophomore season in which he maintained a batting average over .350, Eric Mah will return as a pillar of the Polar Bears’ lineup. Last season Mah lead the Bowdoin team in hits, at bats, doubles and on base percentage. Mah is a consistent presence in the lineup that Bowdoin so desperately needs. Offensive woes seem to have been somewhat of a trend for the Polar Bears over the past few seasons and they could use some more players like Mah to break the monotony.

Pitcher to Watch: Brandon Lopez ‘19, Amesbury, MA

Lopez has been a competitor year in and year out for Bowdoin and I would expect more of the same from his senior campaign. Last season Lopez posted a 4-1 record and a sub-4 ERA as one of their most reliable arms. With three seasons of NESCAC competition under his belt Lopez will be able to guide the rest of his staff as well as use his experience to his own advantage.

Everything Else:

Bowdoin has an extremely disappointing 2018 in which they missed playoffs due to a tiebreaker. They lose many quality pieces this season and it looks as if it may be harder for them to compete this year than it was last year. Their offense was not among the elite in the conference last season
and it projects to be more of the same this year. Bowdoin will have to battle and upset some better ball clubs in order to make the playoffs this year but you can never rule them out.

Colby College Mules

Head Coach: Jesse Woods, 1st Season
2018 Record: 7-25, 1-11 NESCAC
2019 Projected Record: 14-18, 4-8 NESCAC

Player to Watch: Andrew Russell ‘21 (IF) Massapequa, N.Y.

Russell started his freshman season hitting the ground running last season and I would expect him to carry that momentum into 2019. He lead the Mules in many statistical categories in his freshman season including at-bats (110), runs (18), base on balls (8), and defensive assists (65). Not to mention he was also second best in hits (33), putouts (43), triples (2), and tied for second in doubles (6). It’s clear to see that Russell is a jack of all trades for Colby and they need the help.

Pitcher to Watch: Emery Dinsmore ‘20, Waldo, ME

Back in 2017 Emery had a very promising freshman season in which he recorded 33 IP and maintained a 4.01 ERA. These numbers seemed promising but unfortunately did not translate into a successful 2018 campaign. Despite a drop in effectiveness this season, I predict that Emery will make a 180 and really dial in this year. His first start looked like a significant improvement – 6IP, 1ER, 2BB, 7K, so perhaps we can view last year as a fluke. If he can maintain control and the ability to put guys away, it could be a breakout year for Dinsmore.

Everything Else:

The biggest story for the Mules this season is their new head coach. Jesse Woods, formerly an assistant at Notre Dame, has taken the helm at Colby and they hope he will lead them into a new era of success. After a pretty dismal performance last season the Mules hope that some new life
in the program will lead to more success. There is certainly talent to be found on the Mules’ roster, the question is whether or not Woods will be able to get the most out of his new squad.

Trinity College Bantams

Head Coach: Bryan Adamski, 6th Season
2018 Record: 18-15, 7-5 NESCAC
2019 Projected Record: 22-13, 8-4 NESCAC

Player to Watch: Johnny Stamatis ‘19 (IF) Ridgefield, CT

Stamatis enters his final season of NESCAC competition after a solid junior year. Last season he led the Bantams in walks and putouts, 2nd on team in home runs, 3rd in RBIs, 4th in runs (tied) and doubles, and 5th in hits, stolen bases, and assists. Alongside his success with the bat Stamatis is also a stud on defense, recording all of 2 errors last year at first base. Becoming a senior means that Stamatis will need to take a bigger role as a leader on the team and one way to show that is through his consistency on field.

Pitcher of the Year: Andrew Deroche ‘20, North Reading, MA

Deroche is another important junior on the Bantam roster. He returns this year to reassume his role as a starter for Trinity. Last year he led the Bantams in appearances, was 2nd on team in saves and earned lowest opponent batting average. Additionally he 3rd on the team in wins, innings pitched, and strikeouts. It is clear that Deroche is a workhorse for Trinity and they will lean on him this year to lead them to the playoffs.

Everything Else:

Trinity is one of those teams that has the potential to make a serious playoff run despite the fact that they missed out on playoffs last season. It is well known that it is especially difficult to make the conference tournament in the NESCAC and the Trinity Bantams fell victim to this fact last season. This year they return with yet another strong team but whether they have enough to make it over the hump and play in the postseason will be a different question.

Tufts University Jumbos

Head Coach: John Casey, 36th Season
2018 Record: 20-17, 8-4 NESCAC
Projected 2019 Record: 26-7, 9-3 NESCAC

Player to Watch: Casey Santos-Ocampo ‘19 (OF) Naples, FL

Casey Santos-Ocampo returns for his last year attempting to take Tufts back to the promised land. Santos-Ocampo had a pretty good junior year for the Jumbos. He posted a .291 average and added 23 RBIs as well as 32 BBs. I’m expecting a breakout senior campaign from Santos-Ocampo because he has been through it all with this Tufts squad. The highs and lows that he has experienced over the last three years will serve him well as he can elevate the play of himself and his teammates around him.

Pitcher to Watch: RJ Hall ‘19, Marietta, GA

NESCAC fans alike will not be surprised to see RJ Hall on this list as he has been on many awards lists in the past, whether they be pre or postseason awards. As a junior he earned NESCAC All-Conference first team honors and was a two-time NESCAC Player of the Week. Along with this he was tied for NESCAC lead with five victories and his 54 strikeouts were third best in the conference. RJ Hall has terrorized NESCAC hitters for the past 3 years and this last one looks to be more of the same.

Everything Else:

Tufts is geared up for a monster year after missing out on the NCAA tournament. Their expectations will be to return the NESCAC crown to Medford where it rested for several seasons before they lost it last year. The upperclassmen talent on this team is extremely impressive and that is a key part to deep postseason runs. The bitterness of their championship loss surely won’t leave them soon so they will be hungry for Ws until they take that ship back.

Year of Destiny: Hamilton Regional Preview

#10 Hamilton (23-4, 7-3, Lost to #7 Amherst in NESCAC Finals)

The Continentals have been a clear cut choice to make the tourney since before week 1. With a preseason ranking of #9, Hamilton has maintained their top-25 status throughout the season. This alone ensured them entry into this year’s NCAA regionals. They have performed so well, in fact, that they have earned themselves hosting rights for the first two regional games.

Kena Gilmour is the best in the ‘CAC, but can he be the best in the dance?

How They Got Here:

Hamilton was fairly even keel all year long. They were poised for not only a NESCAC playoff run but an NCAA playoff run as well, and now they are presented with that opportunity. Hamilton was consistently successful all year long, all four of their losses coming to NESCAC teams. They started their season running, winning their first 13 straight contests. Leading the scoring for the Continentals during this time was Kena Gilmour. Gilmour was the leading scorer for Hamilton all year long and helped to create a dynamic offense which helped them to such a good season. After their hot start to the season, things got a little bit more shaky as they lost two of their next five to Colby and Wesleyan. The Colby loss was seemingly out of nowhere and was their first home loss of the year. After these two losses the Continentals continued to roll, only losing once more to Middlebury, garnering them the #2 seed in NESCAC play. After beating Colby in their quarterfinal rematch, Hamilton had to opportunity to host the remainder of the NESCAC playoff games after #1-seed Middlebury lost to #8-seed Tufts. Hamilton was able to hold off Tufts, 89-85, in the semi-finals but would then have to take on Amherst. The NESCAC championship was a close contest, but the Mammoths were able to hold off Hamilton until the final buzzer, but hey, nothing wrong with silver.

How They Lose:

One thing is consistent in each of Hamilton’s 4 losses this season, their 3-point shooting. On the season, the Continentals are shooting an impressive 35% from downtown as a team. When looking more closely at each of their 4 losses, we can see that these games do not stack up to those stats. In the NESCAC Final against Amherst, Hamilton put up 19 3s and was only able to convert 3 of them, shooting at a 15.8% clip. In their neck-and-neck battle with Midd at the end of the year where they lost by just one point, Hamilton was just 6 for 21 from downtown. Against Colby they were 4-16 and against Wesleyan they were 6-26. Point being that when Hamilton doesn’t shoot as they can, they put themselves in a much more difficult position. If Hamilton is able to keep up the shooting numbers that they have been putting up all year, they could make a serious run. If they have another 3-19 streak, it could be an early exit.

Peter Hoffmann had a fantastic career

The Competition

Penn State – Behrend (23-4, 14-4, AMCC Conference Champs)

Penn State – Behrend comes in with an impressive record at the end of the season. The Lions were the #2 seed in The Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference but were able to take down #1 La Roche in their conference championship. Very similarly to Hamilton, Penn State’s only losses have come from within their own conference. They have 3 All-Conference players on their roster: Andy Niland and Mike Fischer both earned First Team selections while Justin Gorney was selected to the second team. Niland is the best shooter on the Lions, shooting nearly 43% from downtown and 93% at the line so far this season. He is also the team leader, and all-time program leader, in assists with just over 6 per game. Similarly, he only needs 7 more 3-pointers to become the all-time program leader in 3-pointers made. Against bad teams Penn State – Behrend has shown that they are a lockdown defensive team, at times winning by a 30 or 40 point margin. Hamilton should certainly have the advantage in this game, but i wouldn’t sleep on the Lions.

Andy Niland poses a real shooting threat this weekend.

Keene State (20-7, 13-3, Won LEC)

Keene State enters this competition riding a 12-game win streak. They easily defeated Western Connecticut State by a 27 point margin in the LEC semifinals to advance them to a championship game against none other than Eastern Connecticut State. This was a much closer competition as Keene State was down by 1 at the half but managed to pull out a 72-69 victory to capture the conference title. Some NESCAC fans should be familiar with Keene State already as they have had 2 NESCAC opponents in their schedule, including Hamilton. Early in the season Keene State went to Middlebury and took a tough 93-88 loss. Keene State’s Ty Nichols was fantastic for them against Midd, putting up 26/14/7 for a monstrous near triple-double. Although his performance was noteworthy, it was still not enough to take down the Panthers. Their game at Hamilton was close as well, an 85-80 loss in which Ty Nichols once again lead Keene State in points. We’re beginning to see a theme here, and its name is Ty Nichols. Nichols lead Keene State in points, assists and rebounds, posting up a 27/5/7 clip on average. The Senior from Springfield, Mass is the heart and soul of this team and was recently named D3 Player of the Week as well as Player of the Year in the Little East Conference. The kid is a force to be reckoned with and has the talent to take this mediocre Keene State team much further than they should go.

Moravian (19-8, 10-4, Landmark Champions)

Rounding out our competitors we have our third conference champ in Moravian. Moravian defeated Susquehanna in their conference semis and then took down Drew in the finals to earn themselves a spot in the NCAA playoffs. NESCAC fans got a chance to look at Moravian earlier this year when they took on formerly #2 Williams. Moravian attempted a second-half comeback in this contest but it was not quite enough as the Ephs won 81-72. The leading scorer for Moravian in this contest was CJ Barnes who came off the bench to put up 21PTS, including 4 triples. Lots of triples seems to be another theme for Moravian. While their opponents have attempted 404 3-pointers against Moravian, Moravian have more than doubled that by putting up 832 3-pointers over their 27 games, that’s nearly 31 3s a game. While CJ Barnes is Moravian’s best shooter, their best player is O’Neil Holder, who is leading the team in PPG with 18.4 and rebounds with 6.6. Moravian is a clear-cut 3 and D team and those can always be dangerous in a tournament setting. Catch them at the wrong time and you could be going home early.

Purple Rain: Amherst v. Williams Semifinal Preview

Overview

Amherst clearly has the momentum coming into this game and it’s theirs to lose. While nobody expected this game to be played at Hamilton several weeks ago or after the NESCAC seeding came out, each team now has an uphill battle to claim the conference championship. Williams has looked weak of late but should be healthy after a week off, giving James Heskett enough time to recover from his ankle injury. Additionally, maybe some time off is exactly what the Ephs needed, seeing some tough shooting performances from star guard Bobby Casey. In their quarterfinal victory over Trinity, it looks as if they finally figured something out: balance. During their three game losing streak to Bowdoin, Amherst, and Hamilton, Casey went 9-31 from three-point-range, not on par with his normal standards. He took a ridiculous amount of shots while uber-athlete and maybe the Ephs best weapon, Kyle Scadlock, was underutilized offensively. However, in their 88-77 win against Trinity last weekend, all five starters scored in double-digits and Scadlock finally entered the picture as an offensive threat. He only took five shots, making all of them, but executed well at the free throw line, scoring another 10 points there. Hopefully he is a bigger part of the Ephs’ game plan this weekend like during the 2017 playoff run where he emerged as a legitimate superstar before getting hurt last season. With a big and experienced starting lineup, this Williams team has unlimited potential, but needs to play up to as they are close to seeing their destined playoff run come to an end. In fact, they can hardly view their performance against Trinity as comforting as they were handed a gift of a first round matchup given their low seed. Trinity played well at the end of the year but didn’t have the talent of a fifth seed in the NESCAC and the Ephs took advantage of it. This will be the first real test for the Ephs to see if they’ve adjusted since their skid to end the regular season.

Amherst, on the other hand, has plenty of positives to look at heading into this game: They beat Williams at the end of the regular season, they have been consistent all season, and they haven’t had any injury issues of late. They did, however, lose to Hamilton in the final game of the regular season, losing the #1 seed in the NESCAC tournament, but could have an opportunity for redemption if they beat the Ephs. The Mammoths had a much more difficult first round playoff matchup than Williams, knocking off Wesleyan 63-56, led by a career performance from Fru Che who dropped 30 points. Grant Robinson and Che provide a lethal 1-2 attach for the Mammoths. The duo averages a combined 26 PPG, 9 REB/G, and 4 A/G. Eric Sellew also throws in over eight boards and 11 points per contest too, giving the Mammoths a three-headed offensive attack. Che poses the biggest threat to Williams, however, as the shooter-happy Eph team could be equalized by Che’s 37% efficiency from deep. Amherst also boasts the league’s best defense, allowing under 64 PPG to opponents while Williams is close behind at 65.4 PPG allowed.

Amherst X-Factor

C CJ Bachmann

The senior big man averages 6.7 PPG and 4.6 REB/G but was the key to the Mammoth victory the last time these two teams played. He dropped a double-double off the bench and along with Joseph Schneider, will need to shut down the powerful Williams lineup down low. In order for the Mammoths to have a chance, they will need to hold the rebounding advantage. Williams shoots the long ball better and Bachmann’s play will help keep the ball away from Bobby Casey and into the hands of Che who is Amherst’s most potent offensive threat.

Williams X-Factor

F Kyle Scadlock

I’ve always been a big fan of Scadlock and think that his multi-faceted game is almost impossible to defend. He has touch from anywhere on the floor and is athletic enough to post up down low and compete for boards. He has a way with the playoffs, often finding an extra gear in the limelight, and I can only hope that Coach App includes him heavily in their game plan. If Casey gets cold shooting, Scadlock and Heskett are the Ephs best shot to keep pace with the Amherst offense. Also, Scadlock is a rebounding presence that needs to match up with Eric Sellew and slow him down.

Final Thoughts

The last time these two teams met, Che, Robinson, and Sellew all scored in double-digits to lead the Mammoths to victory while CJ Bachmann and Garrett Day came off the bench to add a combined 24. Because so many players in the Eph lineup have a high ceiling for points, Amherst will need to see a similar shooting efficiency around 50% to take this game. The Ephs didn’t play poorly last time these teams met either, but were painfully outrebounded 44-33 on the night. Scadlock was the only player to collect seven boards while Amherst’s Bachmann had ten off the bench. These two talented teams should duke it out in a close contest, and I don’t see Amherst having such a lopsided defensive effort like they did before. Williams will narrow the gap on shooting percentage (they shot 41% FG compared to Amherst’s 50.8% FG last time) and ride on to the finals against Hamilton.

Writer’s Pick: Williams 78 – Amherst 73

Trend or Fluke? 2/8 Weekend Preview

Weekend Preview

#19 Amherst (18-3, 5-2) @ #10 Williams (19-3, 6-2)

Amherst and Williams will battle it out in Williamstown this weekend as 2 of the top teams in the country will collide to see who can sit atop the NESCAC. Amherst enters this contests after having won 4 straight NESCAC contests. While Wesleyan was certainly able to give the Mammoths a run for their money last weekend, their other 3 victories were quite convincing. Amherst does a great job of spreading the ball around. Unlike many teams, they don’t have a few dominant guys and a few role players to fill holes but rather they have a complete roster where they are comfortable having any combination of players on the floor. They will need this unpredictability this weekend because the Williams squad they are facing is not too shabby themselves. The big story last weekend was that Williams took only their 3rd loss of the season in an overtime battle with Bowdoin. Looking at the stats I think this game is somewhat of a fluke. Bowdoin shot like Brook Lopez from three, hammering Williams left and right. I think that Williams will be able to bounce back from this loss and finish out the season strong.

Score Prediction: #10 Williams 74 – #19 Amherst 68

Bowdoin (14-8, 3-5) @ Connecticut College (7-15, 0-8)

Bowdoin enters this weekend on their high horse after their overtime win against Williams helped boot them out of a top-10 seed nationally. As I have previously mentioned, the Polar Bears were on fire from 3, shooting 15-28 (53.6%) against Williams. Jack Simonds was the star of the game, dropping 32 points on 6-10 from 3. David Reynolds was nothing if not efficient, scoring 16 on 6/10 from the field and 4/7 from 3. If Bowdoin could repeat this performance every game they would be a dominant force, but that just isn’t realistic. That being said, they certainly aren’t playing a Williams-caliber team in this one so I would expect those players to thrive once again. There’s no two ways about it, Conn’s season has gotten rougher and rougher as it has progressed. There are really no quality wins to write home about and their trajectory does not seem as if there are any coming soon. Senior David Labossiere has had another solid season, averaging over 18 PPG, but does not have enough support to take down the other NESCAC teams. I would say that Conn is tanking for a draft pick, but that’s just not how it works.

Score Prediction: Bowdoin 83 – Conn 69

Colby (15-7, 3-5) @ Wesleyan (15-7, 5-3)

The Mules might just shoot their way deep into the NESCAC playoffs.

Both of these teams have been down on their luck in their last few NESCAC matchups. After an unexpected weekend in which the Mules managed to take down two nationally ranked teams on the road, they have since lost their last two games. To be fair to the Mules, they have had to face the top two teams in the conference, and were heavy underdogs in their last four games. Considering that fact, it really isn’t too bad at all that they are 2-2 in their last 4. Wesleyan, on the other hand, had their run of success much earlier in the season when they took down Midd, Hamilton and Amherst. Since then the Cardinals are 2-3 in their last 5 NESCAC contests, including 3 straight losses. This has all the makings of a very weird, back-and-forth game. While on paper Wesleyan seems to have the better record (in conference), I think this game is closer than it appears.

Score Prediction: Wesleyan 88 – Colby 85

Bates (7-15, 3-6) @ Trinity (15-7, 4-4)

The Bantams will have home court advantage in this matchup as they host a Bates team that has been up and down all season. At the beginning of the year it appeared as if we had underestimated the Bobcats when they were able to win one of their first two NESCAC contests despite a poor preseason. Since that time it seems as they have come back down to their expectations, but still were able to grab conference wins against Conn and Tufts. This will be Bates’ last conference game of the year so I would expect them to put it all on the line for a shot at getting an 8-seed in the conference tourney. Trinity had themselves a great two games last weekend which launched them up in ‘CAC standings to a nice, safe 6th seed in the conference. You hate to say it but a win against Conn at this point is just a given, but their win against Wesleyan may have raised some eyes. That win suggests to me that Trinity are not a team to be taken lightly, especially in a playoff scenario. Another conference win here will really help the Bantams solidify their playoff spot, and they have all the opportunity to get it.

Score Prediction: Trinity 74 – Bates 65

#8 Hamilton (19-2, 5-2) @ #10 Williams (19-3, 6-2)

The battle of the big dogs will go down this Saturday as the two highest-ranked teams in the conference will go head-to-head for the first time this season. Williams is lucky enough to have gotten the home court advantage for this year as they will host the Continentals. Both of these teams appear to be the obvious best 2 teams in the conference (no disrespect to Midd, you guys are dangerous too). Kena Gilmour has been an absolute animal for Hamilton this year, averaging nearly 20 PPG as well as almost 6 REB/G. On the other side of the ball Williams has the always dangerous Bobby Casey who is putting up an impressive 18/5/4.6 line so fat this season. There is not too much to separate these two on paper, which should make it a fun match to watch. Two high-quality, evenly matched teams atop the NESCAC is great for the brand and should be great entertainment value overall. When it comes to both NESCAC rankings and national rankings, this is an important game. I will certainly be watching and you all should too.

Score Prediction: #8 Hamilton 86 – #10 Williams 82

Bowdoin (14-8, 3-5) @ Wesleyan (15-7, 5-3)

After a warm-up game against Conn, the Polar Bears will head into Cardinal territory for their final NESCAC contest of the year. Bowdoin will likely be riding a high after taking down Conn and will have their eyes on taking down Wesleyan in order to secure a playoff spot. While Wesleyan is certainly the favorite in this contest, Bowdoin’s take down of Williams leaves them confident that they can take down anybody, and Wesleyan is no exception. While Bowdoin may be in form, it is also a fact that Wesleyan is a stronger team overall. They have more quality wins in conference and obviously have a better record. While the cards are stacked in the Card’s favor (I’m sorry), you can’t count Bowdoin out. It’s upset season and this game has upset alert written all over it.

Score Prediction: Bowdoin 78 – Wesleyan 76

#19 Amherst (18-3, 5-2) @ Middlebury (17-5, 6-2)

For the moment, Midd sits atop the conference and has their eye on that #1 seed heading into playoffs. The only problem for the Panthers is the strength of schedule they will have to face finishing out the season. Directly after Friday’s Game of the Week versus #8 Hamilton, Midd will get right back into it on Saturday as they host another top-25 team in Amherst. If there is any way to solidify yourself as top dog at the end of the season it is to beat two ranked teams to end out the year. While this is what all Panther fans are imagining, it is much easier said than done. Middlebury has lost games against the likes of Tufts but then comes right back around to easily take down a former top-10 seed in Williams. This tells us to things about Midd: they are dangerous and can beat anyone, they are human and anyone can beat them. They are not supposed to be at the top of the NESCAC ahead of 3 ranked teams, but they are. There’s a certain grind about them that I like and you can see it on the court until the final buzzer. Amherst’s tough week gets tougher after having to face #10 Williams they have to bus up to Vermont and take on a red-hot Midd. While they off-the-court factors may not be in their favor, Amherst has proven they have everything they need to take care of business on the court. I think that Amherst will need to ride whatever energy they have after facing Williams into this game. If it is a loss, play angry. If it is a win play with confidence. This game is also make or break for their bright, shiny national ranking. A loss here will likely kick them out of the top 25 and boost Midd right into it. I know that is something Mammoth fans would not be happy to see.

Jack Farrell and the Panthers are starting to get it going in the stretch run of the NESCAC season.

Score Prediction: Middlebury 83 – #19 Amherst 77

Colby (15-7, 3-5) @ Connecticut College (7-15, 0-8)

While this game may seem fairly insignificant at face value, in reality it could have a huge impact on how the bottom of the playoff seeds shake out. Colby needs to take this gimme win and run with it for their playoff sakes. As was mentioned in a previous NBN article, one more win should launch the Mules into playoff position, and this is their surefire way to secure that win. Additionally, if the Mules are able to capture another win before this point it will help their seeding out tremendously and possibly avoid a first round matchup with the likes of Williams or Hamilton. The key for the Mules all season has been Sam Jefferson. When he is hot there is nobody that Colby can’t beat. He lead the charge that week when they took down Amherst and Hamilton and he is going to need to lead their final playoff push. For Conn this is a final opportunity to not go completely defeated in conference. It has been another rough season for the Camels and I’m sure they won’t be all too upset to see it draw to a close.

Score Prediction: Colby 83 – Conn 71

Never a Dull Moment: Weekend Preview 1/25-26

Friday

Trinity (13-5, 2-2) @ #8 Williams (15-2, 4-1)

Williams had gone completely undefeated until last weekend when they lost their first two games in a row to Amherst and Middlebury. Before this it seemed pretty clear that Williams was the favorite in the CAC and one of the favorite seeds nationally, but at this point we may need to reevaluate. In their game against Midd the Ephs shot a measly 10% from 3-point range. Could this possibly explain what seems to be an out of place loss? Maybe, maybe not, though. The Amherst loss was probably an even bigger blow to Williams, they were leading at half and had all the opportunity in the world to take that game but they couldn’t pull it out. This next game needs to be a turning point for Williams if they still wish to fulfill their lofty goal of a national championship. Trinity, on the other hand, are feeling good right now. They went up to snowy Maine and took both games from Colby and Bowdoin, much improving their NESCAC record. They also were able to sweep their latest 2 mid-week games, putting them up to a 4 game win streak. This would be a huge opportunity for the Bantams to shake up the conference. The only question is whether or not the Bantams have the grit to hold of big bad Williams.

Score Prediction: Williams 81 – Trinity 72

#25 Wesleyan (14-4, 4-1) @ Bates (5-12, 2-3)

The Cardinals are on a roll at the moment as they have won their last 6 games. To make that even more impressive, within those 6 wins they faced 4 NESCAC teams and 3 nationally ranked teams. All of these feats have pushed them into a national ranking of their own. Jordan Bonner and Austin Hutcherson continue to thrive as the core of the Wesleyan team with terrific support from Antone Walker and others. As of now I would consider Wesleyan a member of the top 4 elite in the NESCAC along with Williams, Hamilton and Amherst. The fact that they have taken down two of those three already shows their talent. Bates has been a surprise team as of late. Looking at their preseason record I was not expecting much from the Bobcats but they have held their own in conference thus far. Big wins over Tufts and Colby have lifted them every so slightly out of the cellar of the NESCAC. Despite their success against these low to mid tier teams, I just don’t think they have what it takes to take down a team like Wesleyan, especially not right now.

Score Prediction: Wesleyan 82 – Bates 69

Connecticut College (6-11, 0-5) @ Tufts (8-10, 2-3)

Justin Kouyoumdjian will have to bring his A-game for the Jumbos to make a turn around this weekend

Tufts is a confusing team, to say the least. One game they will take down a Middlebury squad who have received national votes and then the next game they will lose to a bottom-tier team like Bates. It’s fairly evident that consistency is an issue for this squad, but at the same time they are talented enough to hang with most teams. Luke Rogers has been a solid big man for the Jumbos, nearly putting up a double-double a game. Beyond him no names and numbers really stand out on the stat sheet and that is their issue. Tufts has a lot of solid role players but not enough star players. If everyone happens to get hot then they are extremely dangerous but on your average game they are not anything to write home about. If anyone was going to hand Conn their first win of the year, it could be this Tufts team. While Tuft’s biggest issue is inconsistency, Conn’s biggest issue is their consistency: they are constantly losing. David Labossiere and Dan Draffan have been holding down the for for the Camels but there is only so much these guys can do. It’s clear that these guys are good NESCAC basketball players, they just need more of those to support them. I’m going to take a risk here though and say that Conn is going to roll into Medford and pick up their first conference win. I mean you can’t lose every game, right?

Score Prediction: Conn 81 – Tufts 80

Colby (12-5, 1-3) @ #19 Amherst (13-2, 2-1)

The Mammoths find themselves back in the national rankings this week after taking down formerly undefeated Williams in a non-conference matchup. After the last 2 intense matchups that Amherst has had, there will probably be a sense of relief for them being able to stay home and face a slightly less dangerous squad. Amherst has only lost 1 home game this season and it was against a very good Babson team. The thing I like most about this Amherst team is that they receive contributions from everyone on the roster. They have 8 guys that have clocked in for every game and nobody has played less than 7 games this year. When everyone gets a chance to be involved, it is much harder for the defense to develop a game plan and that has showed in Amherst’s success. Colby has been fairly frustrating to watch as a team this year. The big win over Tufts to start the season was extremely uplifting and gave that team a lot of hope but since then it seems as if everything has gone wrong. Losing tight games to Trinity and Bowdoin as well as a loss to Bates really hurts the Mules’ slim chances of making playoffs. With a very talented lineup that includes Sam Jefferson, Matt Hanna, Wallace Tucker and Noah Tyson one would expect that the Mules can compete game in and game out. While they have been competing they just haven’t been finishing. Maybe this weekend can change that, but I doubt it.

Score Prediction: Amherst 92 – Colby 81

Saturday

Bowdoin (11-5, 2-2) @ #19 Amherst (13-2, 2-1)

After facing Colby on Friday the Mammoths with play host to another Maine team in Bowdoin. So far this year it seems as if Bowdoin has taken the “gimme” wins in the NESCAC of Bates and Colby, although they were barely able to hang onto their win against the Mules. I actually think that Bowdoin has a really strong starting 5, or at least core 3, and am surprised that they weren’t able to find success against teams like Tufts and Trinity. Those wins could have been huge for the Polar Bears but they couldn’t pull them out and now they need to look in harder places to find wins, harder places like Amherst, Mass. As I just talked about Amherst in the last paragraph you know how I feel about their team. They are solid and well balanced and can compete with anyone in the NESCAC. I don’t see them losing this game either but I think Bowdoin might give them a little scare that they weren’t expecting.

Score Prediction: Amherst 88 – Bowdoin 83

#25 Wesleyan (14-4, 4-1) @ Tufts (8-10, 2-3)

It’ll be a big weekend for Antone Walker and the Cardinals who are riding a 6-game win streak

Wesleyan drew the short straw this week, having to trek all the way up to Maine on Friday and then all the way to Massachusetts on Saturday. I hope that bus is comfy because those boys will be spending around 8 hours on it over a short 2 day period. Although the travel may pose some problems for the Cardinals, their opponents are less of a problem. Tufts’ loss to Bates put their abilities more into perspective. They are not the team they once were and are now struggling to maintain a middle-of-the-pack status in the conference. While Tufts has been falling behind Wesleyan has been catching up to the top of the conference at a rapid rate. Purely based on momentum this should be Wesleyan’s game.

Score Prediction: Wesleyan 86 – Tufts 71

Connecticut College (6-11, 0-5) @ Bates (5-12, 2-3)

Despite their decent NESCAC record, I don’t remember the last time that Bates was favored in a conference matchup. For Bobcat fans, today is your lucky day. Bates has proved that they are a gritty team who can play up to the level of their opponents, even against much stronger opponents. Conn has had many opportunities to surprise us and pull off an upset but they have never seized it and there’s just not too much to say about them. Bates, on the other hand, has the opportunity to sneak up the conference standing by taking a fairly easy game from one of the only teams that they may have an edge on. I wouldn’t expect this to be a quality basketball game as far as NESCAC basketball goes, but a win will be huge for either team that walks away victorious.

Score Prediction: Bates 74 – Conn 68

Colby (12-5, 1-3) @ #6 Hamilton (15-1, 2-1)

Michael Grassey will have to help lead the way for the Continentals

Hamilton has a pretty simple weekend ahead of them, two home games against two Maine teams that, on paper, they are far superior than. The Continentals have the most consistent starting 5 of anyone in the conference. All 5 of their starters have started every single game that they’ve had this season. That makes it clear that Hamilton has a strong gameplan that they are confident in and clearly they have been executing it well. Colby, much like Wesleyan, have a tough travel schedule this weekend as well as a tough schedule of opponents. When looking at all outside conditions it looks like Hamilton has a huge advantage well before the jump. When looking at all on-court factors, Hamilton wins big again. If Colby wins this game it will be through pure grit and lights out 3-point shooting. If Hamilton wins, it will be because they should.

Score Prediction: Hamilton 91 – Colby 80

Trinity (13-5, 2-2) @ Middlebury (14-5, 3-2)

Our final game of the weekend comes from Middlebury and Trinity. Midd id coming off of a lot of rest time for this game and they also have home court advantage. Trinity will have faced an elite Williams team in Massachusetts and then have to go to Vermont and have to face a ready-to-go Panthers squad. Midd should go into this game with heaps of confidence as the last time that they played a game was taking down formerly undefeated Williams last weekend. Although Trinity has a 4-game win streak heading into the weekend, it is more likely than not that that streak will be broken before they even reach Vermont.

Score Prediction: Midd 82 – Trinity 75

The Mighty Can Fall: 1/18 Weekend Preview

NESCAC Basketball Weekend Preview

Tufts (8-9, 2-2) @ Bates (4-12, 1-3)

The Jumbos come into this weekend’s contest feeling good after a solid win over a very good Middlebury team. They were able to come from behind and take down the Panthers with help from Luke Rogers (16 pts, 9 reb) and lots of help off the bench from Carson Cohen (15/6/4). Coming up to Maine to face the Bobcats more than likely won’t intimidate this Tufts squad. While Bates’ record holds a lot to be desired, when you look closer at their last 2 games you can see that they’ve been putting up a fight against some very talented teams. They took #3 Williams down to the wire and got handed an impressive 7-point loss and against Midd they were also able to stay within single digits. Despite all this I’m still not convinced that the Bobcats have turned a corner.

Score Prediction: Tufts 89 – Bates 77

Middlebury (13-5, 2-2) @ #3 Williams (15-0, 4-0)

Folger has quietly been having a very solid year

Middlebury will have a tough task ahead of them, heading down to Williamstown and attempting to take down elite but recently defeated Williams team. Midd’s season has been a roller coaster thus far, going up and down with wins and losses. They split their two NESCAC contests last weekend against Bates and Tufts and then they split their midweek games too. The most consistency that the Panthers have seen is from Jack Farrell and Matt Folger. These two have near identical numbers on the season, Farrell is averaging 15.9 /5.1/ 4.4 while Folger is averaging 15.6/9.2/1.1. Whether or not these two can handle this Williams squad is yet to be determined. Williams has kept rolling all season but had a peculiar loss in the biggest trap game of all time against Amherst this past Wednesday. They breezed through their first 15 games of the season, but lost to Amherst in a bizarre non-conference matchup this week by one point, having the worst shooting performance that we will likely ever see from them. Praising Williams is just beating a dead horse at this point, we all know that they’re elite and could win every game until the last rounds of NCAAs. Now that somebody has finally beaten them there will be a lot more to talk about.

Score Prediction: #3 Williams 86 – Midd 63

Wesleyan (11-4, 3-1) @ Connecticut College (6-10, 0-4)

To understand how Wesleyan is playing right now you just have to look at the last three games they’ve played. Game #1: Win over (then) #24 Midd. Game #2: Win over #7 Hamilton. Game #3: Win over (then) #24 Amherst. After taking down three straight ranked opponents, I don’t think the Cardinals are going to be scared to face Conn. Part of the reason for Wesleyan’s success of late has been due to Austin Hutcherson. In the first two of those three games Hutcherson went off, dropping 36 and 32 points respectively. If Hutcherson can turn it on again this weekend there won’t be a Camel who can stop him. Conn has really been thrown into the fire in terms of NESCAC play. Their first 6 games are against the 6 best NESCAC teams. It is going to be a tough task for Conn to pull out a win over any of the first 6 NESCAC teams they play and an 0-6 record going into game 7 is a tough look. There have any been 4 games but it seems as if this year may already be over for Conn.

Score Prediction: Wesleyan 89 – Conn 69

Bowdoin (9-5, 1-2) @ Colby (12-4, 1-2)

Sam Jefferson will have to continue to lead the way for the Mules

The battle for the frozen tundra occurs this weekend in Waterville as Colby hosts Bowdoin. This has all the makings of an interesting game. To start it off, both teams are 1-2 in league. Bowdoin’s win came over Bates, who Colby lost to. Colby’s win came over Tufts, who Bowdoin lost to. There doesn’t seem to be a whole lot to separate these two on paper. Both teams have a solid core of starters with some quality bench players that can come on and make an impact. In their preseason meeting Colby was able to take down Bowdoin 83-70. While this may seem like a solid indicator of how this game may turn out, that is not necessarily true. When Colby faced Bates in the preseason they were able to beat them easily, but in conference they couldn’t get the job done. All in all, this game has all the makings of a classic.

Score Prediction: Colby 92 – Bowdoin 88

Basketball Friday Preview: Give me an upset please

Friday Night Preview – NESCAC Men’s Basketball

#24 Amherst (11-1, 1-0) @ Connecticut College (5-8, 0-2)

Amherst rolls into this game with a shiny new top-25 ranking next to their name. Conn on the other hand, has been struggling as of late. This game seems as if it should be fairly predictable, with not much of a chance for success for Conn. While the Mammoths have no trouble scoring, averaging just over 86 PPG, it is really their defense that sets them apart. They have not allowed an opponent to score more than 71 points against them in any one game. For Amherst defense really has been their best offense. Conn enters this weekend having lost 3 of their last 4 games. In their defense, they were up against #3 Williams and formerly ranked Midd, making it a tough overall weekend for the Camels. This weekend may look to be one in the same as they are faced with yet another top 25 opponent. If there’s one thing that Conn has going for them right now, it is strength of schedule.

For the Camels to have a shot, David Labossiere will need to take this game over.

Score Prediction: #24 Amherst 88 – Conn 67

#3 Williams (13-0, 2-0) @ Tufts (7-8, 1-1)

The Ephs have continued to absolutely steamroll everyone that stands between them and perfection. They easily took down Conn and Wesleyan last weekend and I doubt a trip to Medford brings any anxiety to these guys. 4 out of their 5 starters are averaging over 10 PPG and they are holding their opponents to less than 60 PPG. There has been no evidence to convince me that any NESCAC team can take down Williams let alone Tufts. Last weekend the Jumbos went up to Maine and split games against Colby and Bowdoin. While the Jumbos feature 5 players on their roster who are averaging double digits every game, it seems to be their defense that consistently is inconsistent. Tufts can try their hardest to defend home court but in all reality they have next to no chance of taking down Williams.

Score Prediction: #3 Williams 92 – Tufts 78

Middlebury (11-4, 1-1) @ Bates (4-10, 1-1)

While this contest features two teams that are .500 in-conference, not all .500 teams are created equal. Middlebury’s recent loss to Wesleyan was just enough to kick them out of the top 25 while Bates stole a league game from a Colby team that is nothing if not inconsistent. Middlebury has a strong core of starters and their record does not do their talent a justice. They are clearly a high level team in this conference along with the likes of Hamilton and Amherst. This weekend will be an opportunity for the Panthers to right the ship and get themselves back on course to compete for a NESCAC title or a NCAA bid. Bates on the other hand might want to keep celebrating that rivalry win last week for as long as they can. The Bobcats simply are not as talented as the rest of the NESCAC and their win over Colby was an absolute prayer. Before that game the Bobcats were on a 8 game losing streak and this game against Midd might just be a catalyst to start another one.

Spellman and the Bobcats will try to defend their home court tonight, coming off last weekend’s big NESCAC win against Colby.

Score Prediction: Midd 86 – Bates 69

Bowdoin (8-4, 1-1) @ Trinity (9-5, 0-2)

While Bowdoin’s record looks decent, their strength of schedule is not. They have had a fairly soft schedule to start the season and it showed in their game against Tufts where they just weren’t able to keep up. The trio of Hugh O’Neil ‘19, David Reynolds ‘20 and Jack Simonds ‘19 have been holding down the fort for the Polar Bears but they just can’t seem to figure out which other two players complement these guys best and that is where their struggles have come. The Bantams were thrown into the fire last weekend having to face two talented teams in #6 Hamilton and #24 Amherst. Up until these two games the Bantams looked like a quality team, having won 6 of their last 7. Trinity is a highly defensive team who can win a ball game while still scoring less than 70 points. I expect Trinity to turn it around on their home turf this weekend and hold back the Polar Bears in what is sure to be a defensive battle.

Score Prediction: Trinity 68 – Bowdoin 59

Conn College Camels 2019 Basketball Season Preview

Connecticut College Camels

2017-2018 Record: 6-17 (0-10 NESCAC)

Projected 2018-19 Record: 6-18 (0-10 NESCAC)

Labossiere just joined the career 1000 club and is the cornerstone of this team.

Key Losses:

N/A

Projected Starters:

F Dan Daffran ‘21 (14.1 PPG, 5.9 REB/G)

Dan Draffan ’21

Daffran appeared in all 23 of Conn’s games last season, starting in 10 of them. Daffran was second on the team with 325 points scored despite starting less than half of their games. He is also a solid rebounder who has the potential to average a double-double. Daffran’s development is key for the Camels as he has the talent to be one of the top NESCAC forwards.

F David Labossiere ‘19 (17.8 PPG, 5.3 REB/G)

David Labossiere ’19

Labossiere returns for his final season with the Camels and will likely be the heart and soul of their team. He lead the team in points scored last season along with being second in rebounds. It is likely that the Camels entire game plan will revolve around Labossiere as he has been one of the only consistent pieces that they’ve had in his tenure.

F Phil Leotsakos ‘19 (8.0 PPG, 5.0 REB/G, 2.2 AST/G)

Phil Leotsakos ’19

Leotsakos is another senior leader on the Conn team who will look to use his experience to improve upon Conn’s poor record last year. He is a solid role player who does his job but not all too much more.

C Ryan Omslaer ‘22

Omslaer will be contributing factor early on in his career at Conn. He is an absolute force on the court, listed at 7’0” 215. He will look to use his height advantage to dominate the boards as well as be an effective rim protector.

G Jack Zimmerman ‘21 (3.7 PPG, 2.2 REB/G 2.0 AST/G)

Jack Zimmerman ’21

Zimmerman will be in the starting lineup for the Camels for the first time in his collegiate career. Being the only guard in the starting lineup it is pretty clear that he will be the main ball handler for the Camels. He is an effective 3 point shooter and ball distributor who will be used to run the offense for Conn this year.

Everything Else:

Conn has had a rough go of it in the NESCAC in the past couple of years but it does not appear as if they have added all too much to change that this season. They do not lose any major pieces, which is a huge plus for the, but their roster overall leaves much to be desired. I believe that the simply don’t have the talent to match up with the majority of NESCAC teams and this may be yet another rebuilding year for the Camels.

If anything will allow Conn to break out from the woes of their past it will be the combo of Dan Daffran and David Labossiere. These two were the only Camels last season to average over 10 PPG and will both be returning to the starting lineup. The both have the potential to go off any given game but whether they have enough support to carry their team to victory is another question.

Colby College Mules 2019 Basketball Season Preview

Colby College Mules

2017-2018 Record: 11-13 (2-8 NESCAC)

Projected 2018-2019 Record: 13-11 (3-7 NESCAC)

Jefferson and the Mules are known for their electric celebrations.

Key Losses:

G Pat Dickert ‘18 (6.0 PPG, 4.8 REB/G, 1.3 AST/G)

Dickert was a solid role player, seeing at least 10 minutes of action in 23 of the Mules 24 games last season. He was extremely efficient in the preseason last year but when it came to conference play his numbers took quite a hit and subsequently so did his playing time.

F Dean Weiner ‘19 (10.8 PPG, 9.2 REB/G, 3.1 AST/G, 3.1 BLK/G)

Weiner, who was named Maine’s Defensive Player of the Year last season, does not return to the Colby basketball roster for the 2018-19 season. Despite missing a third of last season due to injury, Weiner still lead the Mules in rebounds and blocks while averaging nearly a double-double per game. This will be a huge loss for the Mules because when Weiner was in the lineup last year Colby had a completely different dynamic.

Projected Starting Lineup:

G Matt Hanna ‘21 (11.0 PPG, 3.7 REB/G, 3.3 AST/G)

Matt Hanna ’21

After starting every game but one for the Mules in his freshman campaign, Matt Hanna returns to the starting lineup for another season. Hanna made his presence felt as a freshman, he finished first on the team in assists (76), second in steals (23), and third in points (253). Hanna was a consistent presence for the Mules, he was almost guaranteed to give you 10/3/3 every game and on a good day possibly some more. Hanna is the best ball distributor on this team and will be called upon to facilitate the Mule offense.

G Sam Jefferson ‘20 (15.4 PPG, 3.8 REB/G, 1.9 AST/G)

Sam Jefferson ’20

Jefferson is another returning starter on this Colby team. Jefferson was the leading scorer for Colby last season and that is due to his volume shooting from beyond the arc. Jefferson shot a respectable 36.1% from 3 last year, but he put up an average of 8.4 3-point shots per game, leading to a slight inflation of his scoring. Jefferson is the Mules greatest threat from 3 and when he gets hot it can be dangerous for other teams.

G Ronan Schwarz ‘20 (DNP)

Schwarz did not appear in any action for the Mules last year but nonetheless it appears as if he will work his way into the starting lineup for the 2018-19 season. Schwarz is not a threat from deep but is a consistent mid-range shooter and can work his way into the paint. He is also a solid defender who can record multiple steals per game. Due to the fact that we have not seen a lot of Schwarz in the past he will be a real wildcard in the Colby lineup.

G Wallace Tucker ‘21 (12.4 PPG, 3.1 REB/G, 2.8 AST/G, 37.5% 3PT)

Wallace Tucker ’21

Tucker returns for his second season and cracks the Colby starting lineup for the second time as well. Tucker started 20 of the Mule’s 24 games last season and will look to make an even bigger impact with a year of NESCAC experience under his belt. He is a high percentage, efficient shooter who does not take a lot of shots but when he does they usually go in. He finished second in points for the Mules last year and first in steals. Look for him to continue to improve and develop his game this year.

G Noah Tyson ‘22

Tyson will be a first year starter for the Mules after an extremely impressive high school career. He lead his Rutland HS team to two straight Vermont D-I State Championships in his junior and senior year. After his senior season he was presented with the prestigious “Mr. Basketball” award for the state of Vermont. Similarly, he was named to the First Team of the USA Today All-Vermont Basketball Team. Tyson has been described as a leader, facilitator and relentless on the boards. He will contribute from the get-go for Colby and will hope that his high school success translates to the NESCAC.

Everything Else:

Matt Hanna is off to a hot start this season.

No you did not read that wrong, Colby will be starting 5 guards this year. Of the 14 players on their roster, 9 are guards and 5 are forwards. None are listed as centers although their tallest player (6’7” Sean Gilmore ‘20) could possibly be considered one. This will inevitable make it difficult for the Mules to compete against NESCAC teams that have dominant centers. Although this may detract from their abilities in that sense, it will also create a very fast paced dynamic on the court which other teams will need to be ready to deal with. The biggest positive for the Mules is that the only lost one starter and they have replaced him with high school phenom Noah Tyson. Tyson was a heavily decorated player in high school and it will be interested to see whether he can play at a similarly high level in college. They also are an extremely young team. None of their starters are seniors (2 juniors, 2 sophomores, 1 freshman) and they only have one senior on the roster. This young core may struggle initially but it could blossom into a dynasty in a year or two. The Mules lost quite a few close conference games last year and perhaps with more experience under their belts they will be able to more easily hold off and finish off their talented NESCAC opponents. I believe that this year will begin to move the Colby basketball program in the right direction. While they might not see success immediately, they are well set up for success in the future.
